Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

You're right, Lorenzo! As Johnathan Winters used to say, "sometimes I get to believing my own stuff"!

How's the crawfish business?

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

Yes, you're missing the fact that the 17 amps is the MAXIMUM, not the maximum continuous. That's more like 13 amps.

Steven, I completely agree with you re: the importance of power factor (PF)...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

As stated earlier, the Honda EU2000i will run the Iota DLS-75/IQ4 just fine.

And, the Iota does not "top out" at 13.6V. That's the FLOAT VOLTAGE. With the IQ-4, Iota's use a 3-stage "smart"...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

Andrew,

The 75A charger is better. You're not charging only half the battery; you're charging the battery to half its capacity!

By the way, in the real world you're not charging to 100% of...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

Dotdun,

Yeah, but.....

What cruiser is going to charge his bank of 4 T-105s for more than 4.5 hours to replenish the 50% capacity used?

You gotta be reasonable here, folks. Trojan only...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

Slainte40,

You need to do some more reading. And thinking.

The size of battery, 8D or golf cart or other, has NOTHING to do with the ability to deep cycle and recover without damage. ...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

That's three questions :-)

1. There is no need to buy any charger with more than one output. You simply wire all the house batteries together as a single bank (and leave them that way), and you...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

Glad we're ALMOST in agreement.

Actually, the Iota is a very good selection to run from little generators, because of it's excellent range of acceptance of input power. And, at 80% or better...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

Yes, of course. I phrased it badly. What I meant to say is that you have to look at the specs and do the math correctly, BSEE or not.

One hundred watts input power rarely equals 100 watts...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

Yes, providing it's a modern smart charger it will not/cannot damage your batteries.

RE: the propane, strictly speaking, that's a concern....but a remote one.

As another poster noted, it's...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

Andrew,

It matters somewhat because the Iota chargers are not "marine approved". They are safe and under normal operation do not produce any sparks, but it's best IMHO not to use them on...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

stevensuf,

No, you can't compare watts DC with watts AC. A Honda EU2000i can (barely) handle an Iota DLS-75, but cannot handle a DLS-90. And, certainly NOT a charger of over 100 amps.

Also,...

Re: Questions about replacing battery charger

Andrew,

Assuming you have a diesel boat, I'd look into the Iota line of chargers. They come in various sizes up to 90 amps, and are far and away the best bargains on the market. A good source...
