Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
^^ yea, I am a bit surprised GE does not have more resolution - but it is a remote spot and I know they greatly detune the resolution in places like it. GE - showing just shallow area (at all GE... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
Might be an e-chart 'zoom failure' (like Vestas wind) Zoom 1 - red X on spot boat found - looks like shallowing water but not drying 122487 Zoom 2 - shows drying reef and islands at the spot... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
I have put a red "x" where the boat was found - Cayo Bolivar. 122486 It is 40nm from that last Sat position. The time between sat positions is quite long and the prior sat position was about... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
^^ I am not defending the bolt on keel . . . We went with a welded keel, despite it causing some difficulty when we were trying to get the boat out of the welding yard. There were various times I... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
^^ well the keel removes +2m of height, while the dodger under 1m (there is a well in the cockpit which allows the dodger to be quite low profile) . . . Don't know that is the rational but it might... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
^^ as I mentioned way above . . . . The reason for the bolt on here is the combination of the hard dodger and deep keel make the boat too high to truck (under highway bridges). Not many cruising... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
^^ interesting question. I would strongly guess that boats with steel envelopes around the lead put more stress on bolts than those with the lead "exposed" . . . . Because the exposed lead will... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
Yes, I talked to two people involved in the repairs. The boat was leaking after the second incident. They both said they did NOT see damage to the bolts, they said if they had they would have... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
^^ further . . . . And the boat had been hard aground twice, hard enough to cause some amount of "leaking", without the keel bolts being replaced, (at least to the knowledge of the two immediate boat... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
BTW . . . . My guess about the keel has been confirmed (by people who knew the boat) . . . It was a bolt on. |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
Yes, agreed, you need to use the average density of the displacement to do this properly and that could vary quite a bit - for instance we used a very light low density foam cored interior while this... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
Regarding the internal foam being able to float the boat . . . . The displacement of the steel version of the samoa would be 45,000lbs, with 12,570lbs of ballast - so without the keel would be... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
^^ I can tell you that a keel butt welded to the skin is NOT a method approved by the designers (Van De Stadt). They have exactly two methods they support - #1 is as I described up thread - the keel... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
I have been hoping the Dutch authorities will investigate. But have not heard they will. A half dozen good high rez photos of the boat and a quick examination of the reef would answer quite a number... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
I dont believe much has been 'established' yet. I just doubt this boat would float 9 miles upside down with the keel off, and so believe it likely that it hit the reef. There is a theory that... |

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned
If the boat was built to the 'welded on keel' plans, there is no way, zero possibility, the keel would come off cleanly. The keel should have been brought up into the boat and tied into 3 structural... |
