Re: Storm Sailing Advice
I have seen it done . . . but its not something to be messing around with in storm conditions, and more difficult with full lower battens (probably have to pull at least one out), and the 'bunt' of... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
I find four advantages: First, and the primary reason a trysail is required by the offshore special regulations, is if you break the boom your mainsail is screwed, while you can still fly the... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
Just a couple thoughts on trisails . . . . 1. We carry a trysail and have a separate track (which runs down to the deck so we can work on it sitting down rather than standing up) for it, but we... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
Nice. Thanks. I note two things that caught my eye: 1. Regarding breaking waves, it offers this comment: "In extreme cases the crest falls freely into the trough (plunging). In all cases a... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
Geek alert . . . only read this if you are interested in statistical details of waves :) 1. How frequent are waves greater than 2x significant height? Lets assume a Rayleigh distribution for a... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
Agreed. I believe the latest data suggests the tail of the distribution is actually quite a bit fatter than the Rayleigh distribution suggests. I have not looked at this in a couple years . . . are... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
^^ Wave size distribution is a critical piece of all this (and something I should add to my article). The distribution of waves sizes is quite predictable (Rayleigh distribution for anyone... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
^^ There are three challenges with using the met definitions to discuss 'storm tactics': #1 is that waves are the primary driver of storm tactics, while the met definitions are mostly about... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
We actually sailed into port Davie in a force 9. There is an island - called something like 'break sea island' - that you can whip around and the seas lay down before you have to deal with the actual... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
Pelagic seems to be in your camp on this also. I will have to give it some further thought. We personally are a bit spoiled, because of our structural hard dodger, allows us to be "out and... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
I have had ours out in 'heavy weather' (as an experiment), but not yet in a big breaking waves a 'survival storm' (I do try to avoid those :) ) Personally, I prefer to be going a bit faster when... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
That's terrific. I can then only offer two suggestions: 1. Do multiple real world deployments/practices with the technique, in say 30kts, before you are forced to use it a storm. There are a... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
One comment I have not made . . . is that for relatively inexperienced people seasickness is a big underlying (sort of co-equal with fatigue) cause of bad decisions (like abandoning ship). The stress... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
mmmm . . . . it already does. See the last two sentences in common mistake #3. I completely agree with this point, and perhaps it deserves more space, but I have packed a lot of thoughts into... |

Re: Storm Sailing Advice
That's an excellent question - I don't think I have ever seen it discussed. I will have to think about it a bit more, but my immediate reaction is When your eyes are night adapted you can see... |
