Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Had a look at adventure 55 via the YM.

Very odd combo of features. Flat wide fore. Reminds me of early Benes.

Otherwise quite a piece of alloy hull. Nice base for one's own mods.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Old style boats are a real PIA to sail on. Read more in Peyron's words on Transat web. He is in the Pen Duick right now... Poor guy!

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

It is getting somewhat monotonous, that 'reserve' hum.

Why assume there is any reserve required? E.g. the plumb (or, OMG, reverse!!!) bow can be matched with very narrow entry, or not, built in...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Now this is a sweet shot too!

I agree what is fasssssst & good for some may be less than optimum for others.

We are lucky to have so many varied designs around to chose from.

As for the...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

BTW nice shot of that Dashew ;-) too ... ;-)

I am not sure powerboat and sailboat hulls can be compared 100% BUT the picture stands and has big explanatory value!

I was thinking about this...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I must say that Allures posted above has plenty of allure. THX for sharing!

BTW - WATER BALLAST tanks - I could take them - if you can fill just one of them prior to the passage, you get countless...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I see. Plenty depends on what the boat is doing and where. Even clippers had their bows for a reason.

You are right with my 'perfect bow' boat likely utilizing a soft rubber anchor. I should...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

What do you need the 'reserve' buoyancy for?

IMO, boats with plumb bows and narrow entries are best thing since sliced bread when driving upwind in chop. They drive thru the water rather than lift...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Less windage anybody?

Well: LOWER HULL, in the first place.

No mast steps, less standing rigging, finer mast extrusion (a+b= carbon mast).

No dinghy onboard.

No davits.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Does it have a pilot house at all? I thought Garcia were raised salon style.

The one I saw here (40 something, maybe 45) did not have a proper pilot house, even the dodger looked 'short'ish'.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

It is a more common style of arrangement, resulting from 'IMOCA etc' crossover. It starts with the dodger being hard and extending well beyond the edge of the cabin, then you will see a hard wall to...
