In my experience, these are the most common major money eaters in getting a boat ready to sail offshore:

- hull repairs (serious osmosis, ballast bolts, etc),
- structure repairs (a new rudder...

I think our sailing friends from NZ sailed their Cavalier to the islands and back. They were happy with the boat.
