Re: Efficient cooking

Actual data -- great! :thumb:

You should measure the heat lost from a normal resistance electric stove and include in the mix. I guess it will be similar to butane.

Induction is highly...

Re: Efficient cooking

None of what you describe bothers me all that much. Everyone of course has to decide what seems acceptably safe and what doesn't.

It's an entirely different matter what you do with gas INSIDE...

Re: Efficient cooking

Refilling REFILLABLE propane bottles is one thing. I've seen it done, of all places, in Sweden. It's illegal, and there are some dangers in the process, but so long a you don't overfill them (!),...

Re: Efficient cooking

I think the better ones have different power settings, and you can control them. My NuWave has independent controls for wattage and temperature, and you can dial the wattage to whatever you like and...

Re: Efficient cooking

Expensive houses in Europe are being built mostly with induction these days. I'd be surprised if that's not a trend in the U.S. as well. Viking gas faux commercial stoves are pretty '90's -- and...

Re: Efficient cooking

Sounds reasonable. Note also that almost all yachts big and small, even circumnavigators, spend most days at some dock or another, usually with shore power. So you might think about a portable...

Re: Efficient cooking

Yes, of course, exactly what you say.

A regular hot plate is a nasty way to cook -- difficult to control the temperature, and uses a lot of power -- that's why we grew up preferring gas cooking....

Re: Efficient cooking

Yes, for boiling water, induction has no advantage over an electric kettle, which is almost 100% efficient. Electric kettles are fantastic and I wouldn't be without them. My boat, which often has...

Re: Efficient cooking

Well, I'm a vegetarian, so I don't fry any meat, or bake it, or do anything else with it. YMMV!

I don't use the oven much -- maybe once a week?

A micro/convection oven would be the very...

Re: Efficient cooking

Well, I'm not selling it.

Obviously, gas is easy and practical and that is why 99% of cruisers cook with it.

But the premise of the thread was what are the practical alternatives to gas.

Re: Efficient cooking

Well, some boats' electrical systems couldn't handle it, others could.

If you have a charger-inverter with power boost -- something I wouldn't be without -- you can add inverter power for...

Re: Efficient cooking

I have a good gas system and four burner gas stove and oven, but like you I don't like propane.

I have a Nuwave induction plate, and it is so fantastic, that I only use propane any more for...
