Re: Poorly marked lobster pots
Sure, certainly, AIS pot markers would not benefit some sailors, and I would never suggest that these would be a substitute for good visual marking. But they would be a Godsend for sailing on... |

Re: Poorly marked lobster pots
I like your flashing light idea, which would help a lot. In some places, pots are marked with tall flags and radar reflectors - also really good. But why do you think AIS markers would be of... |

Re: Poorly marked lobster pots
Yes, but in fact if the pot is in a legal place and properly marked -- the waterman is not legally responsible for damage in case you ran into it. Ron is right. In fact on the contrary -- you are... |

Re: Poorly marked lobster pots
They might not care about some WAFIs opinion, but if they are not complete idiots, they might care about the fact that laying pots in a marked channel is Class 3 misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of... |

Re: Poorly marked lobster pots
Thanks; this is of course an important perspective. But I don't think that the "convenience of rich yachties" is what is really the main point here. Getting entangled with pots causes damage to... |

Re: Poorly marked lobster pots
Tee hee. Actually, it might be called Fisheries Enforcement and, oops, it already exists :) I don't think enforcement would be a big problem. Put warning tags on improperly marked pots for the... |

Re: Poorly marked lobster pots
No matter how well marked, if they don't have a light, you won't see them on a dark night. I've about decided there's nothing to do about them besides keeping as sharp a watch as you can, rope... |
