Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Any alarm which is sounded over an N2K network can be silenced from any station. But I know what you mean -- I hated the DSC alarm on my old VHF (the one which came with the boat), which had no...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I have forward looking sonar, and my new chart plotter will sound an alarm if I am running into what the electronic chart says is shallow water.

The forward looking sonar is useless for this...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Of course, but you really have no choice but to pay attention when you're sailing in busy waters like the Solent. The most perfect alarm system in the world is no substitute at all for continuous...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I don't think anyone has advocated against alarms generally.

I personally think alarms do more harm than good in environments where most alarms will necessarily be false. It's a distraction,...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

That's only because there's no status category in AIS for dragging anchor! :D

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Have a look at the Solent during the weekend :) You will find a, er, target-rich environment.

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

In port and coastwise you also have the ultimate filtering device -- the "off" button!

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

You are not contradicting me.

If Class B is so expendable (and I believe you), then it makes sense to avoid pushing the system to dispensing with Class B sets, if it doesn't interfere with our own...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Thanks -- yes, I will do that if I can't figure out another way.

One option is to pull a cable to the helm and feed the radio data to the cockpit plotter, which has a free port and will bridge the...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

You say that Class B is "designed to fail" when the system gets overloaded.

According to some reports, this is actually happening in some crowded places. I can report from my own observation that...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

A superb analysis of this thread, which got yanked off track when it became a debate about rights. But I think we've left all that behind us now, right? :)

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Yes, but it's not the AIS which is the problem -- that's working fine. It's the DSC position reports which I would like to see on the plotter. So I need to get NMEA data from the radio. It would...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Position polling is a fantastic function. Our handheld is a SH H851, and it's great being able to see where the dinghy is with the push of a button. Will be great for cruising in company (haven't...

Oh, right, duh. I don't have a whistle so that rule kind of faded in my anyway poor memory . . .

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I just saw this:

CDR Salamander: "Five Short! Let's go!" (https://cdrsalamander.blogspot.ru/2013/05/five-short-lets-go.html)

pretty shocking stuff.

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I have been reading about this incident since last year, and still can't understand what happened. Was there ever a report issued on it?

And what do you mean "order five short"? Five short...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Major thread drift going on here, but I can't resist -- interesting topic.

That's a shame. DSC is terrific. Instead of broadcasting your call to the whole world on 16, you put in the MMSI...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

It's not part of the specification for Class B and I'll bet is not even allowed on Class B sets. This facility was one of the reasons I initially was attracted to Class A, but then I started to...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Evans was only really saying "Some of us are being distracted from all the moored boats transmitting AIS; would you mind maybe shutting it off when you're not using it?" A request echoed by a couple...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I don't really know -- why don't you ask Nigel, or another professional mariner? I think there might very well be a difference for someone between 100 targets, all at sea and of potential interest,...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I don't claim that this is authoritative, but here's what Wiki says:

"AIS was developed to avoid collisions among large vessels at sea that are not within range of shore-based systems." Automatic...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I don't think Evans said that the problem would go away if people would switch off in their berths. I think he merely said that life would be made easier for other mariners if they would. Two very...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Yes, I appreciated those arguments when they were made, and I think they are valid. I still, personally, come out more on the side of Evans and Nigel -- if my transmissions from a dock or mooring...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Query whether these situations (also, the tight quarters situation mentioned in the previous post) are really suited to AIS in its present form. Can it give useful information? If you are getting a...
