Re: Radar or Not ?

Exactly. You're only required to use it when the circumstances/conditions require it.

Re: Radar or Not ?

Hostility? against whom? AIS thread? it' called "Radar or Not?" which sounds more like radar than AIS to me

What's wrong with you; pls. keep your cool. You asked "what more is...

Re: Radar or Not ?

Okay, I checked it out. That article also shows a picture from a Furuno DRS4D 2' sized scanner (conventional NavNet 3D radar) of the same area. Tell me exactly what it is lacking compared to the 4G...

Re: Radar or Not ?

1. proof of that 17 nm range in rain
2. make SARTs visible
3. make other active radar tech visible, like Sea-Me etc.
4. show RACON buoys
5. show energy consumption figures
6. demonstrate ARPA...

I have never watched a video with more nonsense than this. "unmatched short range performance"... Ok, they continue to explain this like a conventional radar will show you targets from 80' away while...

Re: Radar or Not ?

Let me start with saying that I actually sailed through the busy traffic lanes of the North Sea / English Channel with just a Garmin 12XL hand GPS (still have it :-). So that would support the...

Re: Radar or Not ?

I think a good point for AIS hasn't been discussed yet... in contrast to radar, AIS can "see" behind land features like a cape, mountain etc. This means that AIS can warn for collision while even the...

Re: Radar or Not ?

Barnie, I think you're talking about watching in general while I was talking about eyes glued to screen by dedicated radar operator (or AIS). I think that this only happens on navy ships.

I agree...

Re: Radar or Not ?

but but... that is a conventional set, not the new broadband or did I miss something?

No, you don't have to do that... you can be 100% sure that they don't see you on AIS because you have a...

Re: Radar or Not ?

 you mean that there are no conventional yacht radars in the same price class as the new broadband sets? And that they are physically bigger? And that they use so much more energy?

Do...

Re: Radar or Not ?

Exactly the reason that many incl. me will state that broadband radar is great for the 2nd "close range" radar set. Boats that only have one set should have a "regular" (modern, not the 1992 el...

Re: Radar or Not ?

I completely agree that sailors should do a radar operators course regardless of how well the automatic modes of their radars function.

And (not but, as this doesn't contradict what I wrote above)...

Re: Radar or Not ?

Yes, we understand that AIS does things no radar can do. It also does things that no GPS, depthsounder, VHF etc. etc. can do, plus you can turn that around where every other tool does things that AIS...

How can you plot charts when you don't have the charts? I hope this isn't the old "must be paper charts or you die" argument again....

I agree that AIS is not a must-have tool yet but it's close...

Yes, I have seen this in use on the North Sea too, but that was just for temporary things like missing buoys or a ship that has just run aground etc. In the case of that ship, others still reported...

I have to disagree with this statement. First, your AIS does not determine position, speed and course of targets... It's those targets that send you this information if they want and it may or may...

Re: Radar or Not ?

I think folks should also consider an active radar reflector, like the Sea-Me. These will show as "ships echo's" on radars around you. They are also nice and small plus you can switch them off when...

About ARPA or MARPA... don't assume it's working when you get a lock or values for CCA etc. Only when you have at least a "gyro stabilized" compass with 10 updates per second, you get good data. When...

Re: Radar or Not ?

Exactly, radar should come way before AIS on any yacht that does some extended (away from home waters) cruising. It'll work in the rain if you train yourself in the use (or better take lessons) and...
