Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I am very much pro alarms but only valid ones, with false alarms prevented. A false alarm decreases safety.

In busy areas I still use AIS and alarms. I suppress all alarms for stationary targets...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Of course not, it's only possible to certify something after it's development is completed and can be offered for the certification process. The 261 was never even offered for certification because...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Kidding aside, mine is a development (pre) version of the SR261. With programmer to change software etc. I spent 4 months with these guys to get all the bugs out and test it in real conditions, until...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I have class-A. Actually, I have a development unit and can load either class-A, class-B or class-A+class-B software. I helped during development and this is a left-over (SmartRadio, which produces...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

You can?! that is good news. But you can't send messages? I think there are more differences among the offered units than are apparent to us or at least to me. We should compare the popular ones. I...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

When I see a class-B but the name doesn't show up (which is only transmitted now and then it seems), I interrogate that unit to get the boat name and other info that is missing. This works very well....

How people can have such differing views, interresting is it? In my view, air waves are a natural phenomena, and thus have no nationality and can by definition never be a public commons. They are not...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

@Evans (sorry I cant't quote your post because it's one big quote...)

You described two situations but those were not situations where the AIS system has become overloaded.

But I now see that...

I think all the techies agree along the same lines; it is our apparent inability to explain this to the rest that frustrates me. We all gave it our best and didn't even come close...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

Yes, or like somebody else reported I think, an error with a shore D-GPS station, sending wrong correction data. But if that would go on for so long??

In the Amsterdam-IJmuiden Canal there is a...

Indeed, I do not agree that leaving transponders on degrades the system. The system is perfectly fine with it, that is my point. How many mobiles were transmitting while docked? 50? That is nothing;...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I have found and documented dozens of bugs in the SmartRadio transponders. SmartRadio then fixed those bugs, send me the new firmware, which I programmed into a "development unit" and tested the...

It was called YachtAIS but the author stopped selling it last year. I think Vesper comes very close to it though, if you are willing to tune it's filters. Vesper even sells a display unit with...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I'm afraid that regulation will force us to have active transponders at all times rather than turn them off. They want to watch you, don't want to see you go dark. :whistling:

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

I am very disappointed with the AIS knowledge demonstrated here on CF. People who know a bit about it are incapable of communicating that in an understandable way to the rest and I just can't seem to...

Re: Please turn your AIS off when docked/moored/anchored

+1

I'm afraid we're past the point of trying to make sense on a technical level and it has now become about choosing sides where you and me are not willing to take either of those two sides as we...

As soon as that pot picking boat zooms off, your AIS will alarm if he gets into a collision course with you. My last post was not complete, let me fix that: when a mobile for which alarms are...

The slow downs that are reported now and then are caused by the plotter software or by the alarm routine software, not by the system design itself. The important thing is to have your unit switched...
