Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

The bungy is a damn good idea !

Any feedback from someone who has one of these Flemings as to how they set up the course setting dial would be much appreciated.

South Georgia - simply stunning....

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

Ben - We still have to sort out the best way to rig up the course setting knob on the unit as our rope was just temporay and hard to adjust.

It is a Minor, not a Major and pertty sure it is first...

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

Yeeeeha - it worked :)

Many thanks to all. Charliehows spotted the issue and Gjordan backed it up.

The critical factor is the direction of the top turret is reversed to that shown in the...

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

Downloaded both manuals for the vanes you mentioned, will study at length latter in the day. The monitor manual is very detailed and we should be able to gleen some good info from them.

We are...

In that hour we got the sails balanced and tried the vane. It did not work at first but just before we had to pull the pin we got it to steer a course in a corridor of about 30 degrees. That was way...

We had a short sail the other day to try it out for the first time since the many discussions on this thread.

It was a rough day on the water but we got an hour of upwind sailing before we turned...

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

Yes, we are thinking that the control lines to cog on top are for course setting.

As for online manuals, there is a very old copy that says nothing about the course setting cog. We have an...

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

Brilliant, the video clips give us a good idea as to how much movement in the vane translates into movement at the wheel, etc. Thanks for posting those youtube clips !

Only thing we could not see...

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

Ummmmh, that's interesting. Now I really need someone who has used one of these old Flemings to say this is how it is, or not. A photo of one installed or working would be brilliant "a photo is worth...

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

The axle is angled up a bit, higher at the back (well that is the way I set it up).

A bit over two turns lock to lock.

Good the hear the old flemings do work well, I was wondering if I bought a...

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

The boat was on a mooring what that photo was taken, so it is not indicative of what might happen in motion, also I had been playing with the control lines so I probably pushed it into that position....

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

That is an awesome rundown ! Thanks

Will print out the whole thread and ponder the details on the boat when we next go to Sydney.

The control ring on the top can turn 360.

Our one and only...

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

It is a servo pendulum vane.

The steering lines are as straight as we could make them, sacrificing some access to the wheel but the alternatives were to use a lot of blocks and a very roundabout...

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

Will do. Might borrow some BB blocks as well to test the system with.

The rope we are using is spectra, it is about 7mm and very slippery on the outer.

Anyone know how to set a course on these...

Thanks for the detailed guide, just what we were looking for.

Re: Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

Thanks for the tips.

We will decrease tension, though we did have some slack lines on some runs as the knots were slipping at first.

Wheel brake is off, steering is not tight it can be done...

Fleming Wind Vane - Wont work ?

We installed an old Fleming Minor wind vane this week on our 35' cutter. In the sea trials we could not get it to work :(

While motoring it would steer the boat through about 90 degrees before...
