Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

On a large 11-12 mtrs or > vessel, a split surface could be quite practical. Otherwise I prefer the slutter-rig.
On my little boat, the mizzen is rather a nuisance, save that I can use the mast for...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Give me by all means the Nicholson 58. The Amel looks beautiful save for the horrible portlights in the hull. My little lady sports a same kind of daylight inlets but give hardly any light at all....

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

It is well accepted that the ketch rig does not bring any great advances over the sloop rig when we talk the smaller boats.

Another issue are the larger yachts. Even today for the more capitalised...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

What is the building material? Normally, yachts of that size are alu build.
Did the principal opt for a lightweight fiberglass construction?
Why did he choose Baltic?

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

The bigger yachts, due to their LWL are already fast.

There, the designer will look for easy handling in order to minimalise crew on deck.
Regarding the Baltic I see Dijkstra' s signature clearly...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Schooners are invented by the Dutch, but the real development took place in the US.
It was the prime argument of the coastal pirates and the smaller traders.
To me, it is one of the most beautiful...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Exactly. Who gives a damn of who is sailing what.
I am not in a hurry and the 2nd mast of Neala is still on the shore. Maybe I rig the mizzen, which is placed completely aft, as a radiomast and keep...

or, a more modern version/extension...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Ketch rigs are for the larger boats - say, the Perini-Navi' s and related constructions.

In that trajectory, nobody will ask you what the benefits of a two mast rig are.

The cost-factor is an...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

For our waters - North Sea - windward ability is an important asset. All year round winds will veer genereally from SW to NW and land will always on the lee shore. Occasionally an easterly shows up...

Call names of those other high performance boats, if you please. Which boat is the fastest monohull now?

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

As I already stated Marie Cha IV is a schooner. Although the difference is only shown by the fact that she carries staysails. The mast length is almost similar.

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

It seems that there are quite a number of different opinions among the CF members.
Goboating has his views but that does not imply that they are correct on all points. But his opinion is interesting...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

I absolutely agree that a modern design is more efficient. Nonetheless, personally I prefer the designs of the '70's - for whatever reason. I still regret the sale of the Standfast 40 bitterly.
What...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

I would say, ask a designer who creates the ketches of today. Any of you a designer?
Ask for his motifs/argumentation. Take Marie-Cha f.i. - hardly a faster monohull available, or take the ultimate...

Re: The death of the ketch?

Partially, yes. But not entirely; overhangs have a definite influence on seakeeping and comfort.
I will look for the motifs to underline what I am saying.

Re: The death of the ketch?

Modern lines & designs do not add safety at sea - rather the contrary. Straight bows and sterns have particular disadvantages regarding to seekeeping and comfort.
Sheer and overhangs of the older...

Re: The death of the ketch?

Now I think of it I believe that - in view of the place of the mizzen - my boat is more yawl-like than a real full ketch rig. The mizzen is placed completely aft with the little boom sticking outside...

Re: The death of the ketch?

My boat has a ketch rig but the previous owner did not mount the mizzen mast. I have it stored and think now of mounting it again. It could be an asset in bad or stormy weather, having a small jib...
