You lost me. I thought you were advocating that it's better to have the mast fail rather than have the deck ripped open.

I don't see much chance of my deck being ripped open in any...

This young Dutch fellow built his own boat for arctic cruising. Sails out of Halifax. I meet Him a few years ago. He runs charters on his boat.

A few reasons, inter-related
1. The cold, it wore me down with no way to stand off watch in ice.

2. The Baffin and Labradore coasts are only scantly charted. There are safe passages, and also...

IIRC A rather famous 1913ish expedition (Stephenson) had a small ship(85'?) with two keels. Mary Sachs or something? The problem was the keels not being in line with the prop afforded no protection...

We keep our heavy steel cutter in Delaware City. We can get some fairly sipubstantial ice flows that pack up in the C&D canal and then come down the marina at a knot or two. We have a few fiberglass...
