Re: LFP FLA hybrid

start batteries are very shallow discharged, they have plenty of capacity purely to deliver a decent current for the cranking. They are immediately recharged when the engine runs, you also will not...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

this is not an issue, the voltage drops immediately when the LFP are connected due to low resistance of the battery, the charger cannot keep up the voltage, when the voltage rises above safe values...

Nice project. how do you want to measure cell voltages? A simple arduino shield will not do the trick...

A nice solenoid is the ML-RBS from BlueSea. It is good up to 500A, bi-stable, and is...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I don't think it is too negative, it is realistic in my opinion.

No reason to glorify the FLA, they are consumables with a life span depending on use (amps), charging and storage between 1 year...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

FLA as always charged backup is for me personaly a no-go. I have used smaller inline UPS for years for my servers and other gear, they use AGM batteries inside, always on, and stay charged. Everey...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Well, NO. They were there already installed and operational when I bought the boat. I will use them as-is until they die.

But if I have to built something with no legacy-conditions, probably I...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Well, yes, but is is waste of capacity and money if you just keep a LFP at 50% SOC and not using it for 20 years (MTBF of a LFP bank)

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

The silliness of a hybrid approach was sorted out on the first few postings in this tread. After 200+ comments we have pictured potential pitfalls or solutions to problems that simply would not occur...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

This is the optimal dessign, because small cheap FLA start batteries are used exactly for what they are designed for, to start an engine and get quickly re-charged by the alternator, with very little...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

It is a long tread, and various options were discussed.

The diode separation thing is in fact running them in parallel, by preventing cross-currents - so they will be discharged together before...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

LVC is at 2.9V cell voltage, that translates to 11.6V battery voltage. , what is a empty FLA below 50% SOC.

If you run them in parallel, they will drain in parallel, if you run them separately,...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

You have on any power source a voltage drop when you put heavy loads on, even on shore power.

But this is a no-brainer for someone with electricity knowledge, because any real world power source...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Is true for all kind of inductive loads.

They should have some protection around (e.g. by protection diodes, as done on relays etc.)

However, this is not a LFP only issue, but applies to every...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Completely independent circuits is very appealing, you'll need probably different capacities too, technical loads are far less demanding then house loads.

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Two independent LFP batteries is also a complex thing.

In general there a re two approaches.

One is to create 2 encapsulated systems, each with its own BMS, and a dedicated solenoid that...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

In theory it looks appealing, but I would opt for a clean transition to LFP or sticking with FLA and making some marginal improvements on the monitoring and charging - e.g. by adding some solar and a...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

It comes down to amps and voltage.

No problem to find a profile that fits both, by dropping one earlier. A GEL profile is pretty close to the LFP profile, except the long absorption time. Also you...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

LFP cells are usualy at least as reliable as FLA batteries, what can fail is the BMS to keep the cells balanced and could eventually switch the charging or discharging off.

More error-prone are...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

A hybrid solution is possible, however the devil is in the details.

Some just parallel LFP and FLA, What happens is, empty LFP gets most of the Amps in the first charging time until it reaches...
