Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

I understand Chaz's operational definition for a yawl being identified by the mizzen stepped at a point aft of the waterline length; however this definition fails when you consider that it's not...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

"News" to me! It's always exciting to hear of old things that are new to me!
Thanks for the interesting history. I'll likely still use the contemporary definition, but it's good to be wise to...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

I have used the mizzen on my ketch as a backrest,

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

It's also quite common for a ketch to have it's mizzen mast behind the helm. Having the mizzen mast in a position that obstructs the view of the helmsman is not a definitive feature of a ketch. ...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Just because a number of people have continued to make the same mistake for a long time it does not make them correct. The helm is only at the rudder post on boats with a tiller and not a long...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Defining a ketch or a yawl by the position of the helm is neither traditional or correct. The definition is determined by the position of the mizzen mast being forward or aft of the rudder post. ...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

This seems to be a common strategy for skippers of ketches. We rarely reef, but just drop the main and sail with jib and mizzen only too.

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Maybe it was stated here earlier, I'm not prepared to read through the 300+ entries, but another strategy of the ketch rig is to lower the center of force on the sail area in order to accomplish...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Nicholson58, Thanks for the details about your beatuful boat. I'm a little more labor intensive with putting them out and putting them away, but I've smallerr sails to deal with. The "cutter rigged...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

This sounds way to low for the sails and rigging. Were you speaking about replacing shrouds only?

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

I've read this several times without understanding. Are you saying that your main and mizzen furl in the mast? ...you never "change" a sail,- by this, do you mean that the selection of which you furl...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

I'm with you for all of your earlier post, but here you might as well be saying that you have Tootsie Roll Pops and never licked your way to the center!

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

I guess you take your masts down seasonally,- mine haven't been down since 1985. They are keel-stepped and I change my shrouds without removing the masts. I do have a triatic and I would think that...

Re: The death of the ketch?

Let's go way back to post number two! I like the concept of going under brides, but then I'm considering the thought of going under bridges too! I'm in Florida an very concerned with hurricanes. ...
