Re: LFP FLA hybrid

No, Alt should be hardwired to just one bank.

Automatic switch to get both charged together.

Ensure Alt can't be load dumped.

Manual switches if any to direct **load** feed, not charging.

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Not requiring an addition control, if the contactors (relay vs solenoid) are designed to withstand 10-20% higher current than the maximum they will encounter.

So if you anticipate an occasional...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

At this point those wanting to get into the details and pro vs cons of those unique Sterling CVSRs, ProSplitRs and ProCon IFs, should IMO start a new thread appropriately titled to attract more &...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Yes the Sterling BB fronting all charge inputs is a great approach, that's the only regulator touches the bank, all upstream sources can be left legacy, cheap, stupid, old, fragile, doesn't matter.

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Yes but the other ones you're paying lots of extra money for, are IMO solutions in search of an actual problem.

But adjustable setpoints are indeed very rare in any OTS VSR suited for marine use,...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Looks good. I would have the A circuit be a Reserve deep cycle bank in lead, see no use in carting around a Starter type.

Yes the Alt is A circuit hardwired to the lead bank,, but the starter...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Needlessly convoluted. Are the setpoints even adjustable?

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

See Cpt Pat's logic, link #251 that resurrected this thread. Paraphrasing, feel free anyone to refine if too rough.

Assume charge sources are "lead side" A. LFP circuit B, combiner between.

No...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Yes if that is indeed the case the idea is useless.

Easy enough to test, I would not rely on a general paper.

I agree with the rest, just note boats with low usage do often get by fine with...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

This was my original design scenario Main / Reserve rather than Starter / House, when I posted the idea over a year ago.

I do think it is worth prototype testing IRL.

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Well that is true, by definition.

Say it is an expensive Lifeline bank, might only need a top-up every couple weeks.

Or if Firefly, just quarterly.

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

If you mean the ratio between the total potential output of an ICE source, and that going into increasing SoC of the lead bank then that is true.

Like an 80A alt output where trailing amps is...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I was thinking much lower AH, the last couole hours may only be from 97%-100%.

But OK, maybe start by testing wuth

large Main bank is LFP, smaller Reserve is lead.

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Overcharging is less black and white.

To me 14.6V is way overcharging, but just reducing cycles lifespan to mfg rating

so "damage" remains invisible for many years.

Going higher even than...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

The closer to dead flat the less likely to get any usable life.

All depends on your standards. Industry standard EoL is 80% SoH, aka residual capacity. I don't like to push past 70% myself, but...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

CNB, you make a lot of exaggeratedly negative comments about lead / FLA.

Not going to argue them here, if you want to, start a new thread.

Just wanted to post a heads up for relative noobs to...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Note that the rule is

Don't store LFP at high SoC.

Usually spec'd as

Don't store **higher than** 50-60%.

In fact lower is just fine.

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

For the long tail functionality, a 60-100AH LFP bank would be plenty to service even a very large FLA one.

The key variable is what SoC do you want to stop running your ICE charging. On say an...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Yes but only for redundancy. Obviously with a very large LFP bank, stacking them is sub-optimal, we all wish he'd ship the bigger ones soon.

But high amps is only needed if charge time is limited,...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Yes, fine scenario, not to me a Hybrid setup.

Means to me ongoing energy flow between the two banks, as with the lead long tail charge from LFP as outlined above.

Not just a disconnected...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Sure it is, no problem at all.

Just need a good charge regulator, and to keep water topped up.

Done every day in millions of setups, no idea where you get that notion, totally false.

Now if...

Just get a PM on this, prefer to address here.

The FLA - LFP hybrid idea has only one goal that I consider makes sense, or at least any other benefits are side effects.

That is combatting the...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Still better that all current goes into the bank, then switched to the "surplus loads"

Rather than the hours of crossover as amps acceptance reduces,

you don't want loads to take too much and...
