In another scenario, what if the captain turned around and found him, hauled him back on board and while they are trying to restrain him he kills one of the crew.

Interesting question, I still think I would. 1000nm from shore I would expect radio contact from plane or ship not a dedicated visit. I would not be expecting the cavalry to come over the horizon and...

I would have set of the epirb and conducted MOB. What I don't know is what I would do if I found him. I would be reluctant to bring him back on board.
