Re: Keel tank construction

Thanks for that. Yes, I got a similar approach recommended by a resins enthusiast/professional on boat design. They recommended painting the area with a couple of coats of VE first then the mat....

Re: Keel tank construction

Yeah, not a lot of concern. But, in fairness, I am still reluctant to remove those bulkheads in the keel. I mean, it SHOULD be ok... but who knows...?

But seriously, it's all dead weight really....

Re: Keel tank construction

Some of the same problems apply. I.e. I would need three separate bladders, and they are not cheap, at least in terms of my budget.

I also had a HORRIBLE time removing a hardened bladder tank...

Re: Keel tank construction

So... not sure what you are saying here...

Are you saying the chopstrand/vinylester is a GOOD idea? Or do you think there will be an osmosis problem if I do that?

Re: Keel tank construction

Yes, I noted that. But most sources seem to agree that vinyl ester is better for tanks when it comes to blocking chemical penetration. Since bond strength is not an issue for my construction plans...

Re: Keel tank construction

I was surprised too. The story came out because I called the original main owner after doing some work on the interior and getting really worried about the smell. It did not smell like polyester at...

Re: Keel tank construction

A 42? Interesting. I’ve heard of osmosis in a lot of the smaller boats, but pretty rare on a 42. Mine was built by a bloke who didn’t trust fibreglass so had it laid up thicker than standard....

Re: Keel tank construction

Thanks Don, but no, not interested in adding aluminium or other tanks. I've investigated that avenue to death.

Really trying to get some responses on the original question, which was about how to...

Re: Keel tank construction

OK, that's one approach I had not considered. I have some PVA mould release, so I could just coat the hull and bulkheads with it, then build the tank in-situ.

One downside, just thinking about it...

Re: Keel tank construction

I looked into this, but it seemed like it was going to cost a fair bit, particularly if I wanted to use most of the space. At least AU$500 to get something that used 70% of the space, and then'd I...

Keel tank construction

Hi all,

Background: I am turning the space in my encapsulated keel into a fuel tank. I am sick of the boat leaning to port or starboard, depending on whether I have more fuel than water, this way...
