Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

This makes no sense. Japan's system is more like a regulated power utility, with those outside the common grid provided power by the government. All prices are government set and access is...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

You misunderstand a free-market. A market where price controls in one area is opened up to an area with no price controls is not a free market. The basic economic forces defining it are missing in...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

I'm only discussing prescription drugs.

I said you had to put aside the "necessity" part to address that question.

But the curiosity is that there is price elasticity in pharmaceutical drugs...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

If the markets were opened, then Canadians would be paying more. Why do you think it would be the other direction?

If one stays away from the illegal trade, and works within the regulations,...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

Wow, I don't know what to say to you anymore. "Analyz(ing) the regulatory and market forces in order to price products" isn't how free markets work? Can you think of any other companies operating...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

I don't understand. I was just talking about normal prescription drug prices in Canada vs. the US.

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

I understand how you are thinking, but the elasticity is greater than you think. For example, the patient can change the prescription to a generic and less expensive drug if available. The patient...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

Canada does not have a free-market for pharmaceutical companies. They must negotiate prices with a primary purchaser that has a lot of power (the government). You will actually find that some drugs...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

I'm argumentative for taking umbrage that you made up a quote and attributed it to me?

Again, non-prescription OTC and prescription generic are not the same thing, and both are different from...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

The consumer is not constrained in the market, they are just not organized with regard to their purchasing power. That would require government intervention, or some other form of single-payer.

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

I already did. In a previous post. Meetings are held with economists, lawyers, etc and the market for the product is determined and dissected. Pricing is set based on what those market conditions...

OK. One more time. I am talking about prescription drugs. I have explained to you how they are priced. Did you pay attention? Why do you keep telling me I have not?

Now it is your turn to...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

At least you are now starting to admit that some of the data and examples you use are incorrect.

I provided you with data that was 20yrs fresher than the data you used. It also shows that the US...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

People here have been trying to figure that out. Perhaps if you live in another country, you are exempt from buying water on the US exchanges. Unless you have a lot of money (it rains a lot where...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

Water is controlled almost everywhere in the sense that it is a municipal utility in most places, and highly regulated and price-controlled where privatized.

Those with private wells are the only...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

Again, the discussion was narrowly on the pharmaceutical market and not the general healthcare availability. There are many different types of markets underlying the healthcare access entirety. For...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

There is a cost to controlling pharmaceutical prices, and that is that the research and development of pharmaceuticals carries a large price. I won't break out why that is, but it is not because the...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

The problem in hospitals is a bit more complicated. There, microbes travel freely and get exposed to all kinds of antibiotics in short-term doses. A person's microbes being treated with one...

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

Yes, that is one of the real cost-suckers. I don't have any data on it. I must point out, however, that the US consumers are highly complicit in these lawsuits. I don't mean to defend the lawyers....

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

This is a strange debate we are having.

The case was made that US drug prices are high because of government involvement intentionally obscuring the costs and access.

I make the point that...

I keep proving those...

I've described your deflection in conflating "pharmaceuticals" with "healthcare access". Please explain to me how the free market conditions are not being met with pharmaceuticals pricing only.

Re: Affordable Care Act - catastrophic plans cancelled

It is an emotional argument that healthcare demand is infinite. One does have the choice to forgo the product, and one does not have a "right" to unlimited access to free or inexpensive product.
