Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
That's the rumour, but their union rep and lawyers told them to zip it. So very little is (officially) known about what was going on on the bridge. What is known for sure is the bridge... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
I suspect they had all of their bridge equipment in good working order, but were more or less confident in their position and weren't closely monitoring their electronics. Guard zones were... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
Mark, I am not suggesting people go to school for 4 years before going sailing. I am saying that this forum doesn't permit me the time to fully explain the relationship between people and... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
I think the evidence is there to suggest that the presence of chart plotters can and does influence people's behaviour. It just isn't possible to illustrate the evidence effectively on cruisers... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
Okay, now I'm a little annoyed. You've been aground a "couple of times". Not 50 or 60? You are calling me a Strawman? Illogical and deceptive? Smokes, I've been aground a couple of times in an... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
That's pretty easy to agree with. If you're bumping into stuff- you're doing something wrong. So that brings us around 360. If you are an experienced navigator, the navigating part should be easy... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
This is exactly my point. You find it more relaxing to simply glance down at a small device, I find it more relaxing to take a bearing and plot it on paper below. I find it more relaxing to... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
No, I was not calling you a slave to your electronics. I just think they are part of the enjoyment for you. Absolutely I have a quality electronics panel. And I keep my auto pilot in tip top... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
A bit of thread drift here. And I apologise in advance here. I am accustomed to a very efficient form of navigation- done for commercial purposes, not enjoyment. On a commercial bridge, no special... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
I don't really follow along on any chart. I plan my route in advance (my preference is paper, some prefer electronics, as long as you have good electronics either should work fine). Once I turn... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
No Mark, not Raster. My preference would be a Vector Chart on my plotter for analyzing currents and a Paper Chart for route planning and big picture stuff. I have a 5'2"x4' flat surface on my... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
I've navigated the East Coast of Cape Breton. I agree, it is not a good place to be without Paper Charts. I studied for a while at the Coast Guard College. Not far up the coast from there. ... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
Ya, I could see a tablet being useful in that situation. Tablet- or even smart phone technology didn't exist in the time frame I'm talking about. I don't know if they still carry those little... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
When I worked Search and Rescue in the Coast Guard we found paper charts to be a challenge on our Hurricanes. We would photocopy and laminate 8.5x11 sections so we could put it in a binder. We used... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
I totally agree with you. I think RADAR is a fantastic tool and has gotten me out of many jams. Real time information, a real image of surrounding floating and fixed objects. Excellent collision... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
Sorry Dan, not rising to the bait. I don't have the time or the interest in rewriting the posts I've written. Don't count on me to educate you- educate yourself. Sent from my SGH-I547C using... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
Dude, over reliance on a single piece of equipment has been my only argument since the beginning. You have disagreed with every post I've made. So yes, you have been arguing against my only... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
Mark, accidents caused by over reliance on a single piece of equipment is a well documented fact. You reference the study of logic- well I can reference the study of navigation. It's taught first... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
Found my original post. I can't see where I said Chartplotters were inferior to other methods? If anything I suggest they should be treated exactly the same as any other navigational tool because... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
Oh. I tried to identify a few reasons why a boat may have grounded in spite of the use of electronic charts and suggested some strategies to avoid that kind of mishap. Every time I posted... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
I'm still not following the argument that a Chartplotter should be the primary tool for navigation. Are we talking open ocean? I definitely see the value to GPS here because celestial navigation... |

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong
You've called me a Straw man half a dozen times? Amongst other attempts to discredit me rather than my argument. That would be the insults I'm referring to. My arguments are logical and well laid... |
