By the way, a number of Sydney to Hobart race entrants have used exactly the same configuration as I have now got for cellphone coverage while travelling along the coast.

Many thanks guys, for all the valued input. I do have a HF radio onboard, and am very seriously considering investing in a Pactor modem so that I can access email.

I'm planning to cruise around the top of Australia in July/August this year, travelling from Cairns to Darwin. I expect to be away for some weeks most of which will be out of cellular mobile phone...
