What you describe is extremely common, even among automobiles.
The mesh serves as an air oil separator, and sometimes if oil changes are neglected and or cheap oil used the valve cover being cooler...

There are a few reasons for a cylinder wall to become smooth so that oil isn’t contained in the cross hatching and blowby goes up, oil temp goes up, oil gets black quickly and oil consumption...

Actually nearly all race engines, especially naturally aspirated ones idle at high RPM, this is due to the radical camshaft timing, they won’t idle at low RPM, they will shut down.

All internal combustion engines I am aware of have some form of crankcase vent.
However PCV stands for positive crankcase ventilation, a Diesel has no vacuum so unless a pump has been fitted for...

A pre-Oiler is any form of supplying pressurized oil to the engine prior to start up.

It’s often easier than that. If a factory produced boat, then you know the prop it came with, assuming it still has that same pitch prop, if it still turns close to spec RPM, then it’s making real...

And people claim a Diesel won’t last unless run at high RPM.
These motors never saw above 1800 RPM, correct?
