Re: A way To Save Charging Time

I know the MC4 connectors are supposed to be water proof, but I think it prudent to put some silicone grease on them when you plug them into each other.

A way To Save Charging Time

I'd be interested in hearing how effective they are, although in truth in three years I have only once been in a rolly anchorage, and that was due to being just too tired to do the extra 30 min and...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Let me know how the flopper stopper works out, where did you get it etc. if you don't mind. I had assumed two were needed, one on each side

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

I have a kilowatt, and am getting nowhere near that, however I really haven't left the Marina yet with its forest of masts and poles etc.
I may have corrosion on some MC4 connectors as I left them...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

I'm gong to be interested to see how many AH per day you get.
So far I am not getting as much as I hoped, but then I haven't left yet either.

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

To try to answer whether get a Fluke or not is a very similar argument as to buy a Huffy or not.
The Huffy will take you to the store just like the more expensive bike will, and for a whole lot...

A way To Save Charging Time

I find little use for a clamp meter, mine I use on the boat is this one.
I do have a clamp meter too, somewhere. Haven't seen it since we moved, ought to look I guess

A way To Save Charging Time

Anything that you can imagine and some things you wouldn't believe exist measurement / testing wise, Fluke makes.
Fluke is the high end /Pro equipment, and you of course pay for that, but like many...

A way To Save Charging Time

You can tell a lot with a voltmeter, in my opinion.
However you have to understand what your looking at, if you have a decently large load on the bank or have recently had, then your voltage will...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

How long you going to be on shorepower? If more than a few days, I'd cycle the batteries to close to 50%, then do a full recharge like you have, you may as you have seen already have to cycle the...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Oh, and the Knucklehead in Mallorca may have set the monitor perfectly, its my understanding that any amp counter battery monitor is only accurate on day one, from there on it drifts to being more...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Watch your acceptance rate though, I'm not sure how the amp counter works, it may be that it will continue to climb even after the bank is fully charged as there is always some current going into a...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

I know nothing at all about your charger, however if it is a good one, then you can adjust float and absorption voltages, the way I "bump" my Magnum or Outback 80 is to simply set the float voltage...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

This is a load bank I built for flight testing an aircraft.
It has eight 600W aircraft landing lights and is a 171 amp load at 28V,

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Many ways to do it, for aircraft I use a landing light and an amp meter, not scientific, but tells if there is enough battery to operate the radios and nav gear in the clouds until you can land

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Bump the thing up to absorption voltage, or its likely a week from now it is still increasing, that is not too much of an exaggeration, very little charging is going on in float, its not supposed to,...

A way To Save Charging Time

I would force the charger into absorption voltage, one way is to simply set float voltage to absorption.
I would then do nothing for 20 min or so and after that time if the bank really is fully...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

I'd say for the health of the generator it needs to run 30 min at a time minimum. You want it to run long enough to get to full operating temps and the moisture cook off in the oil. Otherwise it's...

A way To Save Charging Time

If memory serves the Smart Gauge has three wires, two go to the Pos pole of each bank ( it will tell voltage of two banks, but SOC of only one)

The third wire goes to the ground I believe, then...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Good sounds like he really helped you, not hitting the battery bank twice a day with high amp loads to cook may well make it last for years longer.
Do yourself another favor and get a smart gauge,...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

This is the key to the puzzle we were missing, why he in fact has shortened his charge times considerably with a larger charger, where conventional wisdom is you don't.
He has a monster house load...

A way To Save Charging Time

No,
He runs a big generator twice a day for them to cook, the generator should help again in the afternoon.
However you look at it, he will be in better shape than with no Solar, just I think...

A way To Save Charging Time

70 AH in 9 hours is real close I believe to my 100 every 12.
Of course that amounts to 200 AH per 24 hours period.
My Kilowatt of Solar won't replenish that, however I believe that I have one or...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

You may also want to either find out how to calibrate your existing battery monitor or invest in a Smart Gauge, I have no idea how the thing works, but it seems to remain accurate.
I assume this...
