Yes, they are useful but don't overcome physics. The shallower water the less distance you see ahead and therefore the slower you want to be going to make good use of the tool.

Running in coral bommie areas under the proper sun angle and clear skies is the best way to go. Unfortunately you aren't always in those conditions for lots of reasons. In places like the atolls of...

I agree with you, when my boat goes over an area that is shallower than its draft it runs aground. What's the point?
