Markets go up and down but in the long run more up than down.

Someone saying something may have a short term impact but as long as you don't panic and do something stupid, it won't have a lasting...

That was my point. Kenomac gave us examples of extreme losses that don't line up with what the markets (stock or real-estate) did...so my comment about the "rest of the story".

Unless you can document some fundamental issue where you don't expect a recovery, this is how people lose money in a downturn. They sell low and lock in the losses. People who sat tight in 2008,...

So yes, if we have WWIII and it lasts close to a decade followed by a rebuilding process, you might have some difficulty recovering...well what's the alternative? I bet most retirement approaches...

I keep seeing people say this or similar...markets go up and markets go down...implying that it's a zero sum game but reality is over the long term, the up times have pretty much always been longer...

Sure if you live a very minimalist lifestyle, it can be pretty cheap in Africa. You can do that in the USA or Europe and live very cheaply also. If you anchor out on the ICW catch fish and live on...

Age makes a huge difference when considering the impact of SS.

SB only being a couple years out from SS, will have a much easier time riding out a downturn until SS kicks in and could probably...

This is a common mistake in a lot of retirement articles. A $3k/month inflation adjusted annuity is a massive retirement resource and drastically reduces the savings required.

That's around a 10% annual return...which is consistent with the long term market. If you are only planning to live for more than about 15yr, you do have a real risk in the even of a market downturn....
