Re: Budget Be Damned

If you were going from the U.S. to the med for a few years, I could see transferring some funds into Euro. Particularly if your plans involved buying a boat that's already there.

Otherwise, it's...

Re: Budget Be Damned

If you know you're going to cruise in advance, you can always hedge currencies if you're at a favorable rate. You can just buy an ample amount of the currency that you think you'll be needing.

Re: Budget Be Damned

When markets go up, they make everyone look like a genius. But there is data, collected over time, that indicate how people can invest safely and conservatively.

And I have found that the harder...

Re: Budget Be Damned

Ferret it away to what?

The problem is that if someone had pulled their money out of investments two months or two years ago, they'd have likely missed out on some significant appreciation in...

Re: Budget Be Damned

Come now. You brought up Trump as if it were relevant to this conversation. I didn't. His commentary, and the actions of the Fed, are publicly reported, and you can consider those as you decide...

Re: Budget Be Damned

The way I see it, there are some securities/instruments that you'd expect a return from, even if there were nobody interested in trading ownership, and there are some instruments that are pure...

Re: Budget Be Damned

I don't necessarily disagree. I said it was speculative.

But I didn't make the statement that you attributed to me.

Re: Budget Be Damned

Crypto-currency isn't investing, it's speculation.

Re: Budget Be Damned

That's more due to lack of diversification than the market, then. You can lose a lot of money in stocks even when the market is good.

Re: Budget Be Damned

The second you put it all in the bank, it starts becoming worth less.

Inflation > savings interest rates.

This isn't that kind of site.

Well, other than boat porn.

Re: Budget Be Damned

I agree that it's a useful discussion. Nothing in any of my posts would be in contrast with that. And it does always work out in the end. Maybe not optimally if it isn't well thought-out.

This...

Re: Budget Be Damned

Well, no. I'm open to any cruising model. Certainly in terms of sailboats someone can pay up front, or they will surely be paying later.

I find the data from the people who actually provide it...

Re: Budget Be Damned

I believe you misconstrue some of the comments. Nobody is "naysaying" your finances, your economizing prowess, or your financial strategy. We were just saying that you weren't providing an actual...

Re: Budget Be Damned

At 15 Euro a day, you're not including an awful lot of diesel, though it may be true that you're not using much.

But what doesn't seem to be included are boat storage costs, haul out and launch...

Re: Budget Be Damned

Ah, so the secret of living on 15 Euro a day is not to include all of your expenses!

I can do that. But then, what about my other expenses?

The interesting part are the boat...

Re: Budget Be Damned

There's a difference between an investment and a depreciating asset with carrying costs. If you keep it long enough, the value does go to zero.

Also, people tend to overvalue their...

Re: Budget Be Damned

This is the rule more than the exception.

People are trying to get value out of their boats, which makes sense. It's also why many find themselves doing a refit a year or two after they buy a...

They're not saying it will be worth $0. What they're saying is that they're not counting on money from it in their financial plan. If they get some money out of it at the end, it will be found...

Re: Budget Be Damned

There's also an issue with downpayments. One of the problems in 2008 was not requiring a 20% downpayment, so people can walk away if the value goes down to much.

I don't think they fixed that,...

Re: Budget Be Damned

Was pretty easy to see the housing market bubble in 2008. People were taking out loans on their houses to buy cars and other stuff.

But it should be noted that people who didn't panic and abandon...

Re: Budget Be Damned

There are lots of ways to measure value, but Tesla is certainly not representative of the overall market, and along with some other fairly large companies, I'd consider it to be speculative in...
