Re: Required or Optional?

Well to spill the beans (wow...here goes my reputation....if I have one......and it's not already bad.......)

I plan to buy a GPS/Chartplotter/Radar combination (probably Garmin HD)

I know the...

Re: Required or Optional?

Shameful!!!!

Well.....I was born and raised in Alabama, I rarely see snow, unless I go to ski (way further up north).

Re: Required or Optional?

Up hill.....both ways.....in the snow........bare foot!!

I do understand, but since this is my passion and my wife at this point is still "iffy". I am going to try and make things "easier" with...

Re: Required or Optional?

Here is one not on the list, but is on my mind.

Windlass - manual
Windlass - electric

In you list, state if you have/want one, if yes, which type. Capstan (vertical windlass) is included with...

Re: Required or Optional?

Just to refresh my points:

SSB - probably receiving only, but HAM not out of the question.
Sat. Phone - no, I think it's cost prohibitive.
Radar - yes
EPIRB - yes , could go with PLB
autopilot...

Re: Required or Optional?

To anyone following, and wondering if there is an answer, here is what I found.

I have a contact on the Hunter forums, which did a little research. He owns a Vision 36 and has the manuals. The...

Re: Required or Optional?

Chris,

Hey....no problem here..... don't think that I'm picking on you, because I'm not trying to.

Everyone tries to help, and that is the important thing here. :thumb:

Re: Required or Optional?

I can see where some people wouldn't warrant the use of radar. If you mainly sail during the day, and anchor at night, a radar is not very useful.

This is based on waiting for the weather at an...

Re: Required or Optional?

Chris,

There are not many freestanding masts (no stays at all), in the market.

Freestanding masts take much more of a flexing load than a mast with stays, so there are some considerations which...

Re: Required or Optional?

Well, the discussion about the radar mounting may be a moot point.

I decided that I would go and browse the boats I have on my list to pre-inspect......and wouldn't you know it. The major players...

Re: Required or Optional?

Well I would think anyone planning to sail would have:

Compass,
Wind direction (not necessary, but very nice to have)
Wind speed
Knot meter/log
Depth
VHF (and possibly a handheld)

This is...

Re: Required or Optional?

Chris,

As with any monocoque structure, any holes can be a point where a crack may propagate from a finished hole. This is due to the design of the skin taking the load of it's work. The more the...

Re: Required or Optional?

It's an aluminum alloy.

No problem, I try to shy away from the freestanding debate.

Re: Required or Optional?

That is almost required more than clothing on my vessel.

A depth gauge will be on the must have necessity list.

Re: Required or Optional?

Actually, I didn't use aircraft research, due to the structural differences.

I did find however, that all of the failures that I found (on this particular model), were due to forces that a regular...

I was going to say something, but I figured one of you "saltys" would have some comment that was much better. :thumb:

Re: Required or Optional?

Jim,

The boat I'm looking for has a free standing mast, which isn't necessarily very conducive to having holes in the mast. The holes would be a point to which a crack could form, causing the mast...

Re: Required or Optional?

I appreciate everyone's opinions so far, keep them coming.

I guess I'm going to do Radar with a aft pole or arch, depending on the specific boat I find. I just can't bring myself to drilling holes...

Re: Required or Optional?

Very nice, but at this point I'll just bookmark the units, and decide later if buying new is the way to go.

Also, I'm not too keen on radar due to the required mounting. The mast is usually the...

Re: Required or Optional?

I just feel that having all the information on one screen makes for easier use. I personally could go with independent solutions, but I don't think the spouse would cosign that situation.

This is...

Re: Required or Optional?

You are correct, I could use a sextant, compass, paper charts, some luck, and probably go just about anywhere. I'm looking more for opinions, and not hard core truths.

I do value others opinions,...

Re: Required or Optional?

We will be cruising from the Alabama Gulf coast (where the Florida panhandle ends) to the Caribbean.

Probably short passages, but do think the ability to do longer passages would be wanted.

I...

Required or Optional?

Ok,

So I'm searching for our new boat, and making a list (like Santa Claus).....

Here are the things which I'm trying to decide if they are requirements or options.

SSB - Yes we do plan to...
