I like the view from the helm. looks like 360 degrees. Staysail tack might be blocking a bit.

The...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

It is difficult to predict sightlines with my (admittedly) simplistic drawings. However, it seems clear to me that a person on the leeward side of a (healed) wide boat will have obscured vision to...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

For those that insist on decksweeping head sails, I have drawn this sketch showing the larger obscured area of the wider boat. Both boats are the same length with the same head sail. On the narrow...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I agree that the visibility directly ahead will be great on the high side of a wide boat.

I disagree completely with your assertion that the visibility that matters most is in regard to placing...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Dockhead, I guess I am somewhat of an outlier when it comes to keeping a lookout, in that I believe visibility should be given more importance than it typically is. I hate the way my wife's car...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Somebody help me understand how the helms-person has good all around visibility when this boat is healed.

If steering from the "high side", the head sail blocks a significant portion of the view...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Also, this is a big reason why I re-rigged Panope from schooner to sloop. The boat went from 43' LOA to 35'.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Barn, I agree that comparing different hull types is problematic. There are multitudes of factors that we are not even mentioning, let alone understanding fully as amateur (wannabe) naval...

I do not mean to challenge the extremely talented Mr. Dashew, but I think this picture is somewhat relevant to the discussion.

All sexy photo shoots should include both bow and stern shots.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Ben, a while back, I penciled (computered) a trailerable cruiser with a nearly plumb stem. I tried very hard to come up with a better "mouse trap" anchor system.

The anchor shank occupies a...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

B, I was just clarifying things as there seemed to be some erroneous responses to Dockhead's statement "Nor do I like the hull form at all, which resembles a Hanse with the plumb bow (no extra...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

A quick sketch to go with the above.

The raked stem boat will likely have:
-more reserve buoyancy
-drier decks (because of flare)
-more deck space
-stronger anchor roller support
-head-stay...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Polux, I think you might be mistaken when you used the word "LOA" above. I you sure you did not mean "LOD" ?

Seems to me that if you really are talking about length over all, you should consider...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I agree 100%.

By removing a mast and other parasite drag items, Panope's windward sailing performance did not change a noticeable amount with the addition of her pilothouse.

However, the...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Ben, I used galvanized wire with nicopress terminations. The shrouds are 1/2 inch - parceled and served 100%. When I built those shrouds I did not know about Dyneema and other Hi-mod rope.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Borealis

4 to 1 scarf joint tabernacle. Mast secured with (4) 5/8" bolts. Top bolt oriented athwartship to also act as the hinge. Lower section of mast is welded to the deck (no leaks) and extends to the...
