"Layman's language" can be wrong or misleading.

I suspect that phrase is only part of the thought; I suspect many think it means "not using fossil fuels" PRODUCED BY MY BOAT.

Sculling can be an elegant solution -- for someone physically capable. You must be; many aren't.

Other stuff is only "free" if you don't count your own scrounging and fabricating time... and...

And they had to deal with scurvy, didn't have refrigeration...

And they didn't always make port at their intended location; just did miss... by maybe a hundred miles or so...
