Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Not to mention the flat stern sections on those ships pounding heavily while slow steaming or drifting. We once had to get a 240 meter containership underway due to the pounding being so severe that...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Thus nicely making the point once again that yacht design is often heavily driven by fashon over function.

However I will say that a sistership to suhaili (a double ended colin archer type) that...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Dude, do I need to spell it out to you like you are a small child.

Of course you dont intentionally ground and dry out a boat like that, but bad stuff happens, despite our best intentions,...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Tides.. when the water goes out, the boat lies on her side. Anything sticking out the side is vulnerable to having a portion of the weight of the boat sitting on it.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

^^^All good ideas, I like the idea of a range hood sucking out any steam...

I have to agree about the pilothouse, mind you that mast compression pole has got me thinking...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

With a flap over the back you can leave the cabin door open with the heater running full bore. Hot air rises and the dodger will get reasonably warm .

It is amazing what a difference it makes to...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

^^ Thanks TJ, thats a good summary, of the pro's and cons, and very interesting to hear your experiences, as I have only sailed the one boat with twin rudders. And some of the issues might have been...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

The forfuna looks good, I like the very slight bow rake, and the functional pilothouse. Not so sure about the twin rudders for high lats, been to Antarctica 3 times on a boat with twin rudders and...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Enjoyed reading about your race with the magnificent 'Jolie Brise' yes those old girls sure can get up and go if the are well sailed.

I would say youve glorified the ride of the heavy double...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I was lucky to meet Rolf and Debra on Northern light when they were in Tassie. Watching them sail her was impressive, and so were their passage times. They really new how to get that old girl...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

^^No, I just stirring a pot of fecal matter... but little doghouses like that have their plusses, it is nice if you can route control lines around them, rather than having to go over them, and if you...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Just isnt my cup of tea, I like the asthetic of sailing with a minimum of gadgets and electrikery or diesel.

This is more my idea of the ultimate in efficiency for offshore sailing.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Sometimes there is no substitute for weight! I remember a cook straight race many years ago. I was on a very modern young 11. Great boat in most weather, but not 40 knots on the nose. We retired, the...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

You do not understand the word efficiency as it relates to cruising. It is a very elusive thing for cruising because almost every cruiser has a different set of proirities that help define what...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Found another very interesting titbit from the farr design group regarding bow slope and fashion.

"The plumb or relatively upright stem angle's typical of today's boats are a product of fashion...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

^^ no I am saying that style of hull shouldn't need twin rudders to be easily controlled. It looks to me like they grafted it on to look "modern", a single deep spade rudder would be simpler, faster...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

This boat looks so wrong. What is going to happen to those rudders when the boat runs aground, and lays over? No propwash over the rudders will make maneuvering that much harder.

Tuning those...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Open box rules aren't so open polux, the 10 deg movable ballast rule penalises narrow boats. The 5 movable apendages rule penalises DSS concepts that allow narrow boats to surf as well or better than...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Id still be concerned with grey water if it is an integral aluminium tank. I guess it might be ok with very good cleaning and occasional use. Aluminium is prone to poultice corrosion if it sits wet...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Polux, your understanding of the complexities of yacht design and racing rules is very simplistic. There are a number of factors in the open class rules that drive them towards wide boats, that...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Because the veiw from the dome is significantly better than the veiw out the windows. It is also higher, so I can see over the dinghy that will be lashed down fwd of the mast. It also gives headroom...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yep, had two domes on my last boat. Worked perfectly for a fantastic 360 degree view. They could steam up if you sat there for hours. But it wasnt a big problem, even in Antarctica.

I had one on...
