Interesting. I have more or less given up on trysails. I'm pretty happy with a good deep third reef in a properly built and strong main. Usually I carry a spare main below somewhere.

But i've also...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

Thanks for this, I for one am very interested.

This is a very good point. And more closely aligns with my real world experience, that 2x waves are a rarer beast than statistics seem to...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

A very good point, thanks for the link. I use the one from the now slightly dated van dorn book "seamanship and oceanography". It includes time as a factor as well, which can be useful. I have been...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

This is where I think the preparation pays off big time. If you have chosen a strong hull, and set it up with the possibility of being rolled or pitchpoled in mind. With things like strong locker...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

The average is the lowest number you see on your wind speed indicator! Mind you in the Cape Palliser storm we had the windspeed pegging the indicator at it's maximum of sixty knots for at least an...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

Also, I forgot to add, before putting the storm gaskets on the main, put double lashings on the boom to absolutely prevent any possibility of it moving. Or if you have gallows lash the boom firmly...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

There is all sorts of conflicting opinions about the effectiveness of helmets and the increased danger of neck injuries. But I think one of the softer flexible helmets could just provide enough...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

Actually it was a W-NW er as well. I have spent a bit of time trying to hindcast the storm. With a fetch of only 35 miles the sig wave height was probably only 20 feet, unless we can include the...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

On reflection I now think that a strong dodger would help even in a capsize as long as there was some decent way to wedge yourself in and something strong to hang onto. The danger would be a head...

Ha. No. I did have a captain on a container ship who used to get out the white gloves for cabin inspections...

On the square riggers it was a matter of pride to get a good stow quickly.

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

This sort of routine is good, not only is it seamanlike but it helps calm the nerves, gives the crew something to do and makes you feel like you are in control. Maybe a laminated sheet with bad...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

Ha, the bit about the noise canceling headphones was a bit tongue in cheek! but honestly I rely on the feel of the boat much more than sound. I Lie in my bunk and try to feel whats going on, timing...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

Certainly this is a plus for the more active techniques, by giving the crew some feeling of control and something to do I think the more marginal cases might be less likely to succumb to the...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

Just looked on google earth, It only shows one seamount, but it's pretty vague. would be keen to see a proper chart. I can't remember the exact location but It don't think sea floor was a factor. The...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

You also see this in the good old Karori rip. Sometimes it heaps up pretty bad even at slack without any real flow. The best reason I can think of is a subsea current being thrown up at this point,...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

I've seen plenty of notations for shallower banks, typically 30 meters depth or so warning of "breakers rep" or "breaks in heavy swell" But not for the deeper features such as 500 meter seamounts. I...

Re: Storm Sailing Advice

The deep sea fishermen I have talked to have mentioned that they like to get well off a seamount if it looks like blowing hard.

Apparently even the deep ones (800+ meters or so) can cause some...
