Re: Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

I've had two different policies, both of which covered my boat in the hurricane zone. I have to submit a preparedness plan and photo's of the boat. It costs about $2000 more per year for the...

Re: Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

Well, we did the two weeks without incident. Our sail from St. Martin to the BVI's was slow. There was only 10 to 12 kts true and we where running at around 130 to 140 degrees off it. It took 15...

Re: Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

We probably will follow the advice to return when the window is best as we like Anguilla so spending a few days there isn't objectionable. I'll also motor sail if need be as Palarran isn't the best...

Re: Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

Um, never mind, the marina is in North Sound. They just must be associated with Oil Nut Bay Resort.

Re: Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

There is a new Yacht Club Costa Smeralda at Oil Nut Bay. I'm wondering if they have marked the channel as indicated on the attached. I've been through this area via dingy and thought it was pretty...

Re: Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

btrayfores and sailingaway,
Since you both have so much experience with this area would you mind one more question? If you where leaving from North Sound back to Oyster Pond, and the winds are...

Re: Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

Thanks for the info sailingaway. Did the adventure stories end happily?

Fortunately I have two engines. The second one only adds 1.5 kts. of speed. So I can do 7 kts under one motor if need be....

Re: Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

Your suggestions of holes are good but as you point out, they will most likely be filled, except Coral Bay. Paraquita may be able to fit me in but they have to get all the charter boats situated...

Re: Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

I've only been closely watching NOAA for one hurricane season but it seems that they track conductive weather patterns extreamly well. In the case of TS Arlene, there was a good 48 hours from when...

Re: Sailing during Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

Well, it's a small distinction but I'm actually in St. Martin :) Where did you get that data? It's good info.

I feel pretty good about my location and I'm fully covered with insurance so that...

Re: Sailing during Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

Thanks for the links and attachments. I hadn't seen those before. Khagen, that's the problem, I'll be heading East at 8 mph as a depression will be heading typically west at typically the same...

Re: Sailing during Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

Maybe I didn't clearly state the question. I'll add that I own the boat, it is docked in St. Martin year around, and we are going to the BVI's for two weeks and returning to my dock at the end of...

Re: Sailing during Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

Thanks Ardoin.
I just got back from my first visit to Annapolis. We didn't have much time to get around as we where at a LAX tournament but really enjoyed the few hours we did have.

No, I've...

Sailing During Hurricane Season in Caribbean - Need Advice

I'm going to be taking a two week sailing trip from St. Martin to the BVI's and USVI's a couple weeks from now. It's about 100 miles from Oyster Pond, St. Martin to Virgin Gorda, but we could be as...
