Re: Let's Get to the Bottom of the Lee-Bow Effect Once and For All
The current causes the sailor to change the angle at which the boat is aligned to the wind power in order to get to the destination. This results in a changed wetted hull shape with respect to the... |

Re: Let's Get to the Bottom of the Lee-Bow Effect Once and For All
Who on earth was talking about a drifting boat? And, who on earth is talking about feeling the ground? I thought we were talking about a boat on the move. |

Re: Let's Get to the Bottom of the Lee-Bow Effect Once and For All
Count me with the stragglers. I can't get past the fact that hull resistance in the water slows a boat down, that changing the heading will change the wetted hull form, and that a hull is a foil or... |

Re: Let's Get to the Bottom of the Lee-Bow Effect Once and For All
Thanks Hoofsmit. The hydraulic force perpendicular to current flow can be massive. I've seen heavy walled 600 dia steel piles break perpendicular to the flow due to eddie effects. Changing... |

Speed through the water may not change but water speed on one side of the hull is different from water speed on the other side. This changes with heading. |

Re: Let's Get to the Bottom of the Lee-Bow Effect Once and For All
I agree the current itself doesn't generate lift but being held against the current by wind or motor does mean there will be hydraulic lift, and this lift will alter with the heading. Easier to see... |

Re: Let's Get to the Bottom of the Lee-Bow Effect Once and For All
Quote; Seaworthy Lass "Unfortunately some people (eg Hoofsmit) still don't understand this and think that the current is somehow acting differently on the two side of the hull creating some kind of... |

Re: Let's Get to the Bottom of the Lee-Bow Effect Once and For All
Just found this thread. The idea makes sense to me just as the aeroplane wing lift works with the lump on the top.(Lee bow being the top side) Maybe water goes above super-critical and lowers the... |
