Do you keep a log?

I’m writing a piece for Cruising World about keeping a log. Or not.
Now that my cruising days are over, I wanted to remember places I’ve been, and things I’ve endured and enjoyed.

Re: Sail recommendation for a stinkpot

I'm curious whether the existing rudder will be efficient with any downwind sail configuration? This really only becomes a big issue if you lose an engine and need to point.

Re: cost for ocean transportation via ship

the dockwise quote, five years ago, for my 35 foot Allied Seabreeze, was $11,600. I wrote about the options and my decision for Cruising World...Here'a link to the piece:...

Re: cost for ocean transportation via ship

Consider high/low season rates. If you can meet a boat returning empty, they will often cut a deal. I got one coming home from Genoa to Ft Lauderdale, by asking for their lowest fare. I then met the...

Re: Porta-bote haters: what's not to like?

I bought one for transatlantic and trans-Mediterranean cruising because I didn't want to carry an outboard and gasoline, I wanted to row ashore, etc. Folded, it stored relatively compactly along the...

Re: Four crew rescued from disabled sailboat off coast of Nova Scotia

A roller-reefed jib is not cut to handle storms. If this was a delivery, as previous posts suggest, then the captain had to deal with the sails he had. A delivery is freighted with deadline pressures...

Re: Four crew rescued from disabled sailboat off coast of Nova Scotia

There but for the grace ....go I. But...roller furling foresails are not made for bad weather. They "could" have put on a storm sail, a small trysail, and been fine, assuming steering was OK, and no...

Re: Looking for cheap international marina cities to live in

Don't overlook Tunisia. Good French-built/run marinas. They are a democracy with some unrest, but government and marinas protect foreigners. It's close to Sicily, Malta. There is regular ferry...

Re: Adding TBT to bottom paint

Because it's legal -- or, should I say, not banned yet -- in a third world country, doesn't make it right. TBT was banned worldwide by the International Maritime Organization in 2003 after its...

Transferring data from GPS II and GPS162 to Homeport

For an article in Cruising World, I need to transfer waypoints from my two older GPS units, to Homeport on my Mac. I can cobble together adaptors, 4 and 7 pin to D9pin to USB, but I'm not sure...

Re: Hurricane Florence

When looking at NHC forecasts, read the "discussion" first. If the crew of the Fantome (lost in Hurricane Mitch 1998) had, they would have seen NHC's clear confession that they had little data, and...

Dear JRM:
I'd like to use some of your great post in my piece, but I'd like to attribute to a real name. May I?
You're still in Santa Barbara?

I've enjoyed this discussion, and the eloquence of many. It confirms my theory. I'll be sending private emails to those I'd like to quote, for more information and/or permission to attribute. Thanks...

The Boat as Idea

Hi - Jim Carrier here, a contributing editor at Cruising World (US).

I'm working on an essay for the May issue and thought you might have an anecdote or thought that would spice the stew:

The...
