A few things to check, from my bitter experience with a 4JH4E.
Check the seal on the raw water filter, if it sucks in air, there may not be enough water.

We are using 3.2.2, the last stable version on the OpenCPN website. I did not want to risk trying a Beta version, but from where can I download it?

Yes we do have two serial adapters. One in software (Prolific for the AIS) and the other in the GPS serial data stream.
The port allocation seems random, but mostly ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1 are...

P.S. As an irony, when trying again with W7, the AIS data displays but the GPS data does not. The data sources were not changed, only a new boot to the other opsys.

Thanks, I have tried the cable idea by changing the computer to one where it all works using the same cables. Also tried another puck. Also tried the whole thing on W7, where I get much more garbling...

The icon is in the Ubuntu programs window. Right click does the same as left click and starts the program which then fails on the write permissions.

3.3-5 Dec 2012 it suggests 3.4-0 is available....

No, sadly. I was hoping to find a way to get the deb file to load into /home/qtVlm instead of into /opt/qtVlm, which is read only. See Cagney's message #310. Any suggestions?
