Somewhat late response here:
Don't know about HP and Apple, but at least for my Dell there is a workaround to this problem (but it requires that the battery of the laptop still has some capacity...

I just saw in your profile that you're located in Oz. While the opposite used to be the case, nowadays I'd say that living costs in Japan are about a third or so lower than in Australia....
