I have the "common ground" for both AC and DC on the bolts of the engine exhaust...

Re: Mystery major short circuit

I am attaching photos of the major components of my electrical system. Several important comments:

1. I see that there are labels on each battery case, and that these are mislabeled. The battery...

Re: Mystery major short circuit

To Brian Russell-I think this answer has real possibilities. I found that I had placed a washer BELOW the fuses, as well as above. I do not know whether that was stainless steel (and can't check...

Thanks, Cadence. No lightning in San Diego, part of our current drought issue!

Re: Mystery major short circuit

Thanks HelloSailor. When I am charging, both batteries are being charged via cables direct from charger, and batt selector switch is OFF.

I keep getting drawn to battery charger as somehow being...

Re: Mystery major short circuit

Responding 7 weeks after initial post. Very rude to post a question, then disappear, especially with all these good suggestions. Other things in life unexpectedly got in the way. However, I am now...

Re: Mystery major short circuit

Sounds like a good answer for many. Fortunately, we have no lightning in San Diego

Re: Mystery major short circuit

That would be an excellent answer, Scrimshaw, but no lightning in San Diego.

Thanks for the ideas!

Re: Right Rotating Prop with Propeller Shaft Offset to Starboard

Reading this in 2015. Don't know if Bets ever bet on that Sabre, but thought continuing the discussion might be worthwhile for others interested in offset shafts. I have an Erikson 35 with a right...

Re: Mystery major short circuit

(In response to long post by W3GAC):

I like all these ideas, W3, and will check them all out one by one. I do have a multimeter and a current clamp. Also, the batteries currently read 12.4 V...

Re: Mystery major short circuit

I suppose this discussion of fuses in starting circuits will bring out some who think that circuit is simpler if left unfused. I am pretty sure I want to fuse protect all my wiring, even the big...

Re: Mystery major short circuit

OK. All these ideas have really got my thinking going, and with it, my memory.

First, some facts in response to questions:

1. The bilge pump wire from Batt 2 pos has its own fuse within 3 ''...

Re: Mystery major short circuit

I really like this idea. I do have stainless steel washers just above the fuses, and will get rid of them!

Thanks!

Re: Mystery major short circuit

A lot of great answers here. I am especially re-impressed with the magnitude of the event-seems like a number of you think something big happened.

I am about to go out of town for two weeks so...

Re: Mystery major short circuit

To both Bill and Jeep,

Bill, I like your theory, but did not start engine between when DC circuits worked and when they didn't. (I guess I could have burned the fuses 99% through, then time did...

Mystery major short circuit

I have blown 2 100A battery terminal fuses on two batteries, and it's a mystery to me how it happened.

Hooked up stern nav light yesterday and worked fine. Added bow nav lights to same circuit,...
