Re: What Color Should Oil Be On Dipstick for 40 HP YANMAR - 3JH5E - SD 50?

It's definitely possible. It takes very little condensation in fuel to misshape nozzles, but maybe you live in an area that doesn't get below freezing or have any humidity and you continually keep...

Re: What Color Should Oil Be On Dipstick for 40 HP YANMAR - 3JH5E - SD 50?

Driving a diesel truck on American roads is definitely not an efficient use of running a diesel engine. News flash, 30000 miles is not a new truck.

Re: What Color Should Oil Be On Dipstick for 40 HP YANMAR - 3JH5E - SD 50?

Oil will darken some on a well maintained diesel, think translucent. Black oil usually indicates seepage or incomplete combustion, or lugging, low load running or tired rings, or injector problems. I...

Re: Frustrated

I know cheap live aboard is gone here in Washington State. You have to keep moving, five miles minimum, no more than three times a year, etc. We are diestroying our maritime history for the people in...

It's really hard to get my eight foot oars out of the water standing up.

Re: Pet hates that people do

About 10 years ago, I was in an anchorage and a 52' motorboat came in. They anchored at a respectable distance, but didn't put out much scope, or even set their hook. Just a little before sunset, I...

Re: How much to rebuild or replace a 40hp diesel.

That's good to know! Beta does seem to be a growing concern. Just in the couple years I've been checking, they've grown from one to 4-5 dealers in the NW of the US. Not to mention Kubota dealers....

Re: Butt connectors for #10 stranded wire

If I may, I would suggest using what are commonly called bug nuts or split bolts with a little copper coat and then wrapped with rubber and PVC tape. It makes the most secure connection and is easily...

Re: How much to rebuild or replace a 40hp diesel.

I put a new 50 HP Beta and transmission in my boat last year. I did the install andall the work at the pier. It cost me $17000. I then had to change the propeller, another $1160 since I don't dive, I...

Re: Who Buys Those World Cruisers at the End of the World?

Fisher's a great NE boat! "300 miles home", I'm thinking that must be Grays Harbor. How is it working on a boat out there? Are there supplies available or do you have to ship everything in? I've...

Re: Seeking "Willy's Jeep" of Bluewater Monohulls

I think I may have what you're looking for, at least mine has been that way for me. It's a little bigger than you're looking for but definitely has easily accessed systems, etc. She's not the fastest...

Re: Hydraulic Steering Hoses - Getting a Headache

My boat has 40 year old copper tubing to the helm. My question is why do boats use copper when every ship I have worked on and industrial application I've worked on have used steel tubing. A...

Re: Center Cockpits: pros and cons

Wow, if I read all this, I'd never look at a center cockpit boat. That said, we've had one for a dozen years, and it's quite comfortable. It is by far the easiest boat to load/unload heavy stores...

Re: Need a new engine 42' offshore SV--thoughts?

Three years ago, we were refilling water at Van Isles and my son mistakingly put 40 gallons of water in our fuel tank. We got it scrubbed and limped with blown out injectors back to our homeport,...

Re: Feels like a scam!

What's really cool is you can now renew your documentation for multiple years. I chose to renew mine for three years this June! I just hope my feeble mind remembers when it's due.

I used it on a ruptured fuel line once. Believe me, I was glad I had it.

Re: Buying on hold - better market ahead?

We bought our boat in 2009, a great time to buy. Bought our current house in 2011, a great time to buy. Everything has been uphill since. There are still good deals out there, if you have patience...

Re: Tender - what to choose

With a boat that size, you have so many options. I have a little 45' and I carry five auxillary craft. Two 10' plastic West marine kayaks outside the lifelines on the stern quarter underneath the...

Re: Why do you have a shore power socket?

I kinda take exception to the idea that hard wired cables are better. My experience as a many years abyc marine electrician is that it just brings the problems away from the boat and to the pier....

Re: wires burned up with 4 100 watt panels

If you don't want to change the fuse and wiring, why don't you wire the panels in series and install a mppt charge controller? Your maximum output would be more like seventy five volts, about twelve...
