Re: Servicing Cummins Engines

are the risers/mixers on the Cummins qsc-500 engine stainless steel? Should they be periodically replaced? I am aware that cast risers can be subject to corrosion, however, I am not sure if stainless...

Re: Servicing Cummins Engines

Hi James,

I also live in Victoria. I would be interested to know the name of the WA company you purchased the filters etc from. I will try to send you a personal email.

Re: Servicing Cummins Engines

Thanks Chris, That all seems fairly straight forward. I will definitely order the workshop manual. Not all the Rivieras have the oil reverso pump. I have been told they can be easily fitted and cost...

Re: Servicing Cummins Engines

Thanks for that. Yes, I will pick up a service manual. I was also thinking of fitting the reverse oil system for easier changes.

Servicing Cummins Engines

I am looking to purchase a Riviera 42 power boat with 2 QSC-500 Cummins engines. They have 500 hours on them and the boat is a 2007 model.

I would like to service the engines myself. I have always...

Re: Fischer Panda Genset

The waterlock on my unit is directly below the genset around the 600ml. However, I have had the same suspicions of the salty air from the exhaust getting around the exhaust valve and causing...

Re: Fischer Panda 4.5 kva ac Genset

Hi Scott,

Yes, the sailing is very nice on the Queensland coast. However, the weather here in the last week has been very cold and windy - quite unusual for this area. No I haven't done the...

Re: Fischer Panda 4.5 kva ac Genset

Thanks Jeff and Scott,

Very good tip. I was not aware of the potential problem. I will certainly close the sea cock on the first start after being away from the boat.

Also thanks guys for all...

Re: Fischer Panda 4.5 kva ac Genset

Hi Scott,

Yes I agree. I don't want to be chasing gremlins when it is not necessary.

I purchased my 42s7 in 1997 and have had it since new. I also have the genset in the starboard sail locker....

Re: Fischer Panda 4.5 kva ac Genset

When I have left the boat for about a month it would take about 20 - 30 seconds for the engine to start. As HyLyte said it does seem like an eternity. I certainly don't want to be chasing gremlins if...

Tellie,

No there is no black smoke at all. Also, it does not burn any oil.

Re: Fischer Panda 4.5 kva ac Genset

It all makes good sense.

Glazing seems to be the most likely problem. The engine has 250 hours and I would say it has run at around 50% load for most of its life.

It is 4.5 kva which should be...

Re: Fischer Panda 4.5 kva ac Genset

Thanks Lloyd for your advice.

How long would you think it would take to remove the glazing at the load rates you suggested?

Re: Fischer Panda 4.5 kva ac Genset

Low compression due to cylinder glazing could be a possibility as I have been guilty of running the engine lightly loaded.

I have plenty of cranking amps and the engine turns over very quickly.

Re: Fischer Panda 4.5 kva ac Genset

So what are we saying here?

That the pressure will hold in the oil galleries for a few days but after a few weeks needs to be re pressurized by extensive cranking?

If this is the case, (and it...

Re: Fischer Panda 4.5 kva ac Genset

I have checked the fuel lines and they are all secure. I don't suspect air is getting into the system. I had already suspected air in the lines so the last time I came up to the boat I bled the fuel...

I have tried to capture the mist drips and I still think that could be the source of the oil. The actual drip show up right at the bottom of the bellhousing. When I am motoring...

Re: What is an acceptable oil leak

Thanks for the info. I will leave it as is. It is not causing any problem and is very small.

I figure that if I keep fixing these very minor things I may be chasing my tail forever. If my bilge...

Re: What is an acceptable oil leak

The motor is very clean. It appears to be coming from one of the bolts at the bottom of the bell housing. It has been leaking for about 5 years and has not increased in all that time.

What Is an Acceptable Oil Leak

I have a Volvo md22 engine with 1800 hours.

It has a minor oil leak coming from the rear seal. It has only about 6 drips of oil per day. It only drips when the engine is running.

I am not sure...
