Thaanks to your excellent avice the problem has now been resolved.
I had the port alternator (dumb) wired to charge only the port start battery with no links to house or solar via the vsr.

You are right. I have 2 seperate start batteries and a house bank of 3 deapcycle AGM's

Yes. I have transposed tachs. As per my post.
It is not an instrument problem.
Port alternator is internally regulated. Stbd is externally regulated.
