Re: What's this part called and how is it supposed to seal?

It's the manifold. I looked at the service manual to confirm before I posted. There's no coolant fill on this engine's HX. There isn't one on most marine diesel HXs. If you can't find a radiator shop...

Re: What's this part called and how is it supposed to seal?

That's not the heat exchanger. It's the manifold. The heat exchanger is tubular in shape, sits at the back of the engine, and doesn't have a pressure cap like that. Take the manifold off, take it to...

Re: My new hvlp sprayer

Interestingly, the PPG paint was about $800 a gallon with the catalyst and accelerator. The client specified the product. I thought I'd save some money repainting my boat with car paint, but it turns...

Re: My new hvlp sprayer

I used a four stage Fuji HVLP sprayer to shoot some PPG commercial truck paint--pigment, activator, accelerator. That stuff was nasty. The Fuji is pretty nice. I got it used and bought a few new tips...

Re: Tartan 33 transom mod

No. We don't have a swim step. My wife and I are in our sixties; we board from a hard dinghy at the stern quarter, where we keep a roll-up web ladder. It's not perfect, but in the years I've owned...

Re: Tartan 33 transom mod

We have a Tartan 33. I'm in the don't modify it camp. It's a lot of time and effort just to avoid stepping over the transom onto a properly mounted--and relatively inexpensive--swim step.

If you...

Re: Great circle sails- Stolen Deposit

My experience with GCS was almost identical to the OP's. Brian just ghosted me. I found him on FB, found out that Ullman SA dropped him, and learned that Craig took over making his sails. I emailed...

Re: Sailing vessel and RORO ship on collision courses - what do you think of the outc

This discussion has gone on for twenty five pages!

Here's my take, derived from forty years sailing Puget Sound. If these points have already been made, excuse me. Twenty five pages is too much...

Re: Poll Cruisers... Code 0 or Asymmetrical Spinnaker

I use both. The code zero is on a furler. On my boat it's for building apparent wind in light air and trying to get some VMG to weather. It close/beam reaches nicely. This seems like a narrow range...

Re: OCEANPLANET ENERGY GIVEAWAY - ends Oct 12

https://oceanplanetenergy.com/watt-sea-hydrogenerators/

We crossed from Hanalei Bay to Vancouver a few years ago. The boat used a towed generator (like the old Hamilton Ferris unit), solar, and...

Raymarine ST2000+ Tillerpilots. Two available. Price is each.

Not new, but unused. These were a factory replacement and a factory warranty repair. Each is as-new. No packaging, no warranty though.

You get the factory installation kit with the tiller pin, the...

Re: That Look You Get...

Our diver (Seattle) sends me a video with the invoice. The hull is always sparkling clean when he finishes, but the fuzz starts growing back within a few weeks. Usually a quick brush around the...

Re: Autohelm/pilot recommendations for Jeanneau SO35

I sail solo most of the time--even when my wife is aboard--and I really, really dislike long distance steering. I have a below deck AP that is over spec'd for my boat, an Aries windvane, and three...

Re: Scaling choices for the unpredictable

I'm in Seattle. There are two Hylas 49s here; they're in the $350k range. I'm moored by Seychelles. It's beautiful, immaculate, and ready to go. Worth checking out. You could literally provision the...

Re: How best to learn to sail a large boat when i'm inland?

Also, there's a nice Bianca 414 at Panhandle YC. The poor dude's been trying for years to sell it. I met him a few times. The price is now down to about $30k. It'll cost a bit to move to the coast,...

Re: How best to learn to sail a large boat when i'm inland?

I live in Spokane. We keep our big boat in Seattle. I leave Tatoosh Island to port at least once a year (this year is kind of a bust though). PM me if you want to go sometime. I also have a Capri 25...

Re: Recommendations on v-berth wall material?

I'm doing that project now. We're applying 5mm adhesive backed closed cell foam to the hull(insulation), and then foam backed perforated vinyl. It'll look great and reduce the condensation. Not sure...

Re: Affordable places to restore a boat near Seattle?

I don't think so, unless you move the boat into an empty field somewhere. Don't laugh--people do that.

Canal Boatyard in Ballard and Port Townsend Boat Haven are two places you can do your own...

Re: Perforated Hull Liner?

Thank you! I normally leave an electric heater aboard during the Winter months. This year I didn't. I'm going to go with the closed-cell insulation under the new liner.

Re: Perforated Hull Liner?

That's really helpful. Thanks. I'm glad I didn't just go out and buy a bunch of Reflectix. I have one of those little round things that blows warm air that I leave on when we are not on the boat, but...

Perforated Hull Liner?

The vinyl hull liner in my V berth is getting old and shabby. Boat is in Seattle, and there's a fair bit of condensation no matter what I do, sigh.

Has anyone used perforated, foam-backed...

On my boat your transportation cost is yours. Almost everything else is covered by me. You show up with--at the least--clothing for the weather anticipated, gloves, good foulies and boots, a hat and...

Re: Is Volunteering as crew to get experience a realistic plan? (for me)

This. On my boat we generally make decisions by consensus, but when things get exciting at sea there can only be one skipper, and that's me. I tell this to everyone who boards my boat. I don't issue...

Re: 3M Dual Lock Fasteners for Dodger Windows

Dual Lock is not easy to pry apart. I've used it on my pedalboards for years (professional musician). Changing out a pedal takes some prying and persuading. It doesn't seem like the right product...
