Re: Rawson 30 sunk on the hard

Was the water level inside (20” up from the bilge) about the same as the normal floating waterline of the boat?

To sanity check this another way, the displacement for your boat is listed as 12,000...

Re: Rawson 30 sunk on the hard

Measure length and beam at the water level.

Length x beam x height (20”) x 0.5 should get you in the ballpark.

Seems like a deck or cockpit scupper leaking horribly (disconnected?) could...

Re: Red cable a Ground??

Replacing it is great, but above is what I would actually do on an 80’s boat that I wasn’t preparing to sell. Tape or heat shrink on the wire, not the terminal, so it’s clear it’s not there for...

Re: Watt to Ah

You’ve already answered the question. 400Ah is 1/2 of your 800Ah battery bank (unless it’s actually a 400Ah bank like your OP says). If something is using 400 Ah per day it will use half of your...

Re: boat purchase...possible opportunity or mistake

Any sub $50k (US) 30+ year old cruising sailboat is going to be worth negative money if you add up the “shop” cost of bringing it back to 100%.

If you are hiring out the work, the maintenance cost...

Re: boat purchase...possible opportunity or mistake

This description very closely matches the 80’s Catalina 36 that I bought for cruising in 2016. I didn’t know much about boats at the time. One difference being mine had a dry cabintop, but wet...

Re: Removing paint from fiberglass - How?

Also, just to make sure - unless you or a previous owner painted the deck, that’s not paint you are looking at, it’s gel coat. Gel coat is basically one with the fiberglass, mechanical removal is...

Re: For those who are cheering on the City of Miami Beach

Not Tom here, but I think this is exactly the intended effect of time limits - open up the area to newcomers by discouraging it as a place to live full time.

Logically, people who see themselves...

Re: Re-Sealing Twin Keels In The Americas

What were you using to tighten them? If they were tight with a 2 ft breaker bar, that should be in the right ballpark. But with a standard 10” ratchet/wrench, most people will struggle to get more...

Re: Re-Sealing Twin Keels In The Americas

What did you torque the nuts to? If it wasn’t leaking, then after some lateral force was applied it was, that strongly suggests there is too much movement allowed at the joint. That suggests not...

Re: Opinions on this boat?

Very nice looking boat. I keep looking for another table.

Is this a table?

Re: No boat is perfect but!!

Interesting that this owner bought it after getting that survey. I can only think of two reasons they would provide that survey while trying to sell it at a ‘not cheap’ price.

1. They spent the...

It’s rate dependent, that makes sense.

Re: 10 REASONS NOT TO BUY VIKING PROPANE CYLINDERS.

Can you explain this a little more? Doesn’t the tank have an over fill prevention device (OFD) and an over pressure prevention device (OPD)?

How does transferring from another tank defeat either...

Re: 10 REASONS NOT TO BUY VIKING PROPANE CYLINDERS.

Sure, that works. As long as you are home, or carry a scale with you.

Still seems highly preferable to just look at the composite tank (which weighs around 10 lbs empty) and know immediately. No...

Re: 10 REASONS NOT TO BUY VIKING PROPANE CYLINDERS.

I think the overfill device that stops the fill is separate from the over pressure device that prevents the tank from exploding.

At least I would hope so.

Re: 10 REASONS NOT TO BUY VIKING PROPANE CYLINDERS.

True.

Except “pound” tanks are labeled by the lbs of propane they safely hold, so full is the amount it says it is. Bigger “gallon” tanks are labeled by their actual physical volume, so full is...

Re: 10 REASONS NOT TO BUY VIKING PROPANE CYLINDERS.

Yes you can do that to sidestep the under filling problem. Doesn’t help with the other part of my post though, which is that the steel tanks stink.

They are significantly heavier than composite...

Re: 10 REASONS NOT TO BUY VIKING PROPANE CYLINDERS.

The exchange system is kinda terrible though.

When you exchange a tank, you get 15 lbs (3.5 gal) of propane in a 20 lb (4.6 gal) capacity tank. According to blue rhino’s website they dropped it...

I feel like we are circling each other here a little.

But point taken, easier to replace, easier to troubleshoot. That makes sense, on balance you are probably right.

Re: Installing a depth sounder and fish finder.

Well maybe you never have to. In my case the depth sounder/transducer were a good 20 yrs old and not working, so I decided to replace instead of troubleshooting. I’m on a small trailer sailer, so...
