Re: Planning a repower. Are Volvo MDI boxes still a concern?

And apparently, at the dealer in Livorno where I got mine there was another recall on MDI boxes recently from Volvo, which means there are still many issues with boxes out in the field.

Re: Planning a repower. Are Volvo MDI boxes still a concern?

Yes they are still a problem. I had my second failure two days ago, the first was in 2018 whilst still under warranty. Problem is, I had a shunt to bypass it but the ZF multilink throttles will not...

Re: Torqeedo v ePropulsion

I have now had.both the Torqeedo 1003 Travel and Epropulsion Spirit Plus in the field as my primary outboard on an inflatable tender.

I would not recommend either in a marine environment. Both...

Re: Ponza, ventotene, Capri, ischia

I would.like the same, especially on the marine park arrangements. However, in the meantime Navily blog has featured all of these areas in the last year and is a good place to start.

Re: Anchoring sea in high wind

If you don't know how long it takes you to drop 5m and 10m of chain, find out.

As helm, you will get over the intended spot, your crew will start to drop the chain, and the anchor will hit the...

Re: No Tax Residence, banks and brokerages

It's been a while since I dabbled in these matters. When I did Mauritius had the most relaxed banking system for westerners.

You could apply for UK residency and declare non-domicile status. The...

Re: More Anchoring Etiquette: should I move?

As the OP I have appreciated the broad range of views and now ask myself what would I do if the same situation happened again.

The first thing I would do is put on more clothes. He was fully...

Re: Best Dingy Outboard Combo 2022 Under $5,000USD

I have used a Takacat 320 for the last 5 years with a Torqeedo 1003 Travel. I chose it because I still believe it is the best size to weight ratio out there. We can have two adults and two mid-size...

Re: More Anchoring Etiquette: should I move?

Fair point, except that I (the OP) am french flagged, French resident, born in the UK and a Catamaran.

The beach at Porto Pollo is a little peculiar in that it is not a bay, just a long beach open...

Re: More Anchoring Etiquette: should I move?

Fair point about things looking closer and harder to gauge at night. The same can be said for waves breaking on rocks or the shore, which always sound closer in the dark.

I had looked at...

Re: More Anchoring Etiquette: should I move?

Pretty well equidistant as I said. I use boat lengths as an eyeball - probably we all do. I am 14m. It gets harder in high multiples but at 1/2/3 x boat length it is fairly easy to estimate....

Re: More Anchoring Etiquette: should I move?

We were lying parallel N-S. We had already swung 180 degrees and distances were sound. But he did not know that, I did. So I knew everything was fine. He did not, although if he knew the forecast he...

More Anchoring Etiquette: should I move?

The following happened last year. Other than being run aground during a storm it is the most upsetting thing that has occurred to me in my years of sailing, basically because I upset the other party...

Re: Anchoring etiquette

What did you mean by a slow bell? If you don't mind elaborating it sounds like it could be very useful knowledge.

Re: Clean an old moldy inflatable

I have also found fender cleaner (I like Clin Azur but I am sure others are just as good) to be very effective in bringing my tender back to a near-new appearance.

Re: Colregs Etiquette

They were not overtaking. I was the windward boat.

In fact, I showed this thread to my wife, who was on the leeward side and she said that initially we were faster and passing in front but that...

Re: Anchoring etiquette

A couple have made the point about his anchor. I had a 35kg Spade fail on me last year - the shaft buckled and split. Why is another story. My backup was a 15kg Fortress (now a 25kg Spade). Gusting...

Re: Colregs Etiquette

Thanks for all the discussion. My take aways:

I was the windward boat more than they were the overtaking boat
I have got some of the power boat/power boat rules stuck in my head that don't apply...

Re: Anchoring etiquette

Others will know better but I always understand that first come first served is the golden rule, and you can't knowingly foul another boat's anchor, so there is scope for a reasonable conversation...

Re: Colregs Etiquette

It was one of those situations where you think you know the colregs until a situation arises - they were approaching from port - does that not make me the stand on if we are both under sail, slightly...

Colregs Etiquette

I wondered what the right etiquette is for a situation i found myself in today?

TWS 6-7knts, I was under main and spinnaker only at about 140 TWA (90AWA). A (lovely - S&S I think) monohull was...

Re: Portable Generator Overloads even when no apparent load. Why?

An update to the problem. It turned out to be the water heaters. They are operated via a mains relay - via a push on push off switch. This means that I need mains power to turn them off - just...
