Re: Looking for Marina to Take Down Mast Near Entrance to Trent Severn from Georgian

We got our mast stepped at Wye Heritage for a reasonable price four years ago. There were a few closer by Port Severn, but they could not handle our 45 foot mast.

Re: Ritchie compass air bubble

Tilt the fill hole so that it's pointing upward and fill the last few drops from a syringe. Overfill by a few drops, make sure no air bubbles are trapped, its a small fill hole, and easy to trap...

Re: What exactly is gpsd for?

The short answer is, if you need to ask then don't choose gpsd.

If you've just got a single Pi then SignalK is the way to go. If you've got other apps that need GPS position that are non SignalK...

Re: heaving-to dilemma

I have a Hunter Cherrubini 37 cutter and I'm not sure it would heave to under main alone, I should try it some time.

One huge advantage to heaving to with a foresail up is that the main sail is...

Re: Mayday calls - where is that exactly?

There are a number of things I could do in the cockpit to decode a coat guard issued mayday call. However in this day and age with GPS and chart plotters we now navigate completely differently than...

Mayday calls - where is that exactly?

I've been cruising for some years now on most of the great lakes and have heard my share of mayday calls. In almost all instances, I'm left wondering, where is that exactly?

The mayday call goes...

Re: Multiple solar panels to a common bus bar?

Re parallel versus series: it depends on your panels. The 100 watt flexible panels only have 19v out put, for these series is the only workable option because once you acount for system losses etc....

Re: deep doo doo....boat is grounded....

I was told that they're going to raise the lake level starting this weekend. This is total hearsay.

There are lots of people hoping that this is true. I over winter in Iroquois and there are lots...

Re: Gps status poor -no position

On a new device it will take a long time to get your very first position fix, as much as 20 minutes. This is due to not having a valid almanac of what all the satellite orbits are. The almanac is...

Re: Failing Non Skid

My PO used beach sand sprinckled onto tacky/wet two part epoxy paint followed by a second top coat once the first had semi cured.

This was bad for two reasons.

The sand grains are brittle and...

Re: Wind predictions

The problem with weather predictions is that we do not yet have the computing power to really run high fidelity models.

As stated earlier in the thread the grid size of the models use are of the...

Re: Trent-Severn waterway in a sailboat - lessons learned

I actually took an informal survey of three lock masters and asked them if they knew what prop walk was and they did not.

Re: Trent-Severn waterway in a sailboat - lessons learned

I did not buy paper charts. I used a combination of my chart plotter and cell phone with Navionics.

Re: Options for adding gauges to Yanmar 3GM30F

Are you any good at electronics DIY. I added 5 temperatures, 6 a/d channels and a pressure transducer to my 3QM30 and send the data to SignalK. I used an Arduino to do so, optionally the Arduino can...

Re: Composting Toilet - Catalina 28 MKII 1996

We have a...

Re: Kingston, Ontario Marina costs and recommendation

In the end you're going to pay roughly the same anywhere you go around Kingston, $2600 for docking, $1400 for winter storage. You can get cheaper but then you're further off the beaten track and it...

Trent-Severn waterway in a sailboat - lessons learned

In preparations for going through the Trent-Severn water way with our sailboat this summer, I found very little helpful information that was sailboat specific. Having now completed it (summer 2019),...
