The rebuild isn't too difficult, but you will need someone to press off and back on some of the parts with a hydraulic press. Do you at least know the transmission make?

Actually, sometimes the stamp IS a thin metal plate on TOP of the case, on the same side as the shift lever. At other times it stamped directly INTO the case, as you describe.
