Re: Which digital caliper to buy?

Exactly. I have one dial caliper and probably 6 digitals. The digitals are very nice. Batteries are really cheap. But a dozen or so and put a few in each case. My cases have spots for...

Sailrite:
I agree. A very good company who is very customer focused. Years ago I met the family when they had a small shop in downtown Columbia City, IN. I was much younger then. They had a...

Re: Dodger Quotation

I have a number of sewing machines, industrials and home machines. I also sew canvas for my own boats and I sew and sell some canvas cover products. But it is a side business at this point. I have...

Re: Best material for water tank

Stainless is easy to weld.
If you can get a clear shot at the crack, use a portable Tig welder with argon and reweld it in the boat. Harbor freight has a 165 amp DC tig welder on sale for $500. ...

Re: LFP+BMS+Ultracapacitors? or (2)(LFP+BMS)?

I actually read most of it.

>One of the things I am trying to do is come up with a simple but reliable system that has some backups, and that is not too expensive or complicated. I don't believe...

Ha ha....
I have no idea what you said to require an apology to the entire group, but I will accept it as well. :-)

Re: LFP+BMS+Ultracapacitors? or (2)(LFP+BMS)?

I am amazed that you have been able to assemble your own batteries and get them past the insurance company. I not doubting what you say, I have just never heard of that before.

I'm not sure it is...

Re: LFP+BMS+Ultracapacitors? or (2)(LFP+BMS)?

This thread has really gone off the rails.

One of the latest suggestions has so many components, its ridiculous. All just waiting to fail.

You guys should really think about what happens when...

Re: BMS DIY

Good luck suing a battery manufacturer that is based in China or a BMS maker that is based in China. That will get you no where.

When you are rolling your own, creating battery packs from raw...

Re: BMS DIY

I think that having a balancer in the BMS is a must. You might not need it right away with high quality cells, but they should be good for 3000+ cycles and eventually as they degrade they will need...

Re: BMS DIY

That isn't a BMS. He doesn't release a lot of details on what that device is doing, but I'm guessing its mostly hype. For $380 I can buy two new 100AH LIFEPO4 batteries.

For a HYBRID system...

Re: A cardinal sin???

Grinder with a cutting disk.
Right angle die grinder with a 3 inch cutting disk.

Re: An extra-heavy-displacement 11ft long Atlantic Proa for circumnavigation

Might be able to buy a used Steel Buoy and do the same thing. Just add a rudder. Somehow rig a big spinaker to it to drag you through the water.
Just hope the wind is going in the direction you...

Re: Catana 471 vendor hiding survey

Engineer here. Knowing a boats history of repair and use is vital to the value of the boat. The snootiness of some of the folks here shows some real ignorance. Tire kicker?? Come on. The guy was...

Real estate appraiser? Does that make you a marine engineer as well. Nonsense. Surveys can be shown to anyone by the seller. The seller revealed he had two old surveys, offered to show them, then...

Re: Remove the alternator - crazy idea?

Forget about blocking diodes, they can work for adding lead acid batteries to lead acid batteries but not for adding lithium to lead acid.

You need all the Alternator voltage you can get from a...

Re: Remove the alternator - crazy idea?

I would not remove the alternator. As has been said, its a source of power that is already one the boat. Why remove it. Adapt!

LiFePo batteries have some quirks just like Lead Acid. The...

Oscillating multitool. Its a total no-brainer purchase if you need to actually make changes. I last used it to cut off two bronze through hulls that had to be replaced inside a closet on a 33 ft...
