My wife and I just attended the Newport RI Boat show yesterday and walked onto several Hylas boats, a 46, 49, 54 (all pre-owned, some now in brokerage), and a new 56. Right next to them were the renowned Oysters, we saw a 54 and a 62, and we liked Hylas 54 a lot. Very impressive design, materials, and from what we've read online, performance.
We are concerned about the draft on Hylas 54 with the fixed 7 ft keel though and would deeply appreciate your input on the hydraulic centerboard design that you own on your 54. Any specific literature links or websites or reviews, or even pictures would be of great help. Does the centerboard design take away much room from the cabin? If we can't find a pre-owned 54 with the hydraulic centerboard, can it be retrofitted and is it worth doing?
