Hello, I'm a woman who started sailing in the mid 80's,and have off and on cruised ever since when time and money permit. Yes, you need a cruising guide book and charts. But, I think more importantly to new sailors and I still use a book called, Piloting Smallboat Seamanship by Chapman's. It's a boaters bible for everything from safety issues to getting unstuck after going aground. A basic sailing course is truly a good idea too. I'm the Admiral, my husband is the Captain, and the cats are just loafers on our boat. This is a really fun lifestyle, good luck and safe sailing.
