Three Canadian Sailors Rescued off Hawai

One has to wonder just what repair the climber thought he could do at the masthead under those conditions. I've been halfway up a 50' mast at sea in somewhat milder but still rough conditions, and what he was doing was pretty unhealthy... even on a well found vessel. And if the shrouds really "pulled out of the deck", well, that sort of construction isn't really compatible with offshore sailing.

I too am glad that they survived, but I don't think that whitewashing the facts that lead to the need for rescue serves us well. This has all the earmarks of a poorly planned and executed voyage in a poorly prepared boat.

I'll await further details, but doubt if they will change my opinion.

It sure said it was a catamaran of some type that the rigging had failed and the mast had fell when they called for help and then the ship came up on the wrong side and crushed there sailing catamaran as it was blown under the ship. Sounds like a night mare being in the water for an hour in the dark after seeing your boat being crushed by the ship. It would not be any different turn out if it had been a monohull, loosing a mast is never a good thing on any sailboat.

Makes me wonder what type of catamaran they were on???

was not a catamaran but a monohull but again if the tanker crash in you doesn't matter much LOL

There was an article recently about a Canadian family who were rescued off a monohull, on their way to Hawaii. Don't know if it's the same story though.

Must have been a setup with a bogus artical about this rescue being a catamaran. I am starting to see why they might have lost there mast looking at the boats shining appearence

This is there boat not a catamaran at all. It looks like it is in bristal condition no wonder the mast fell off

Took 3 pages before anyone realised that the Tourist Catamaran that flipped in Australia wasn't actually a Catamaran - and that also had a picture posted early in the thread . (for me the main clue was in the number of bows. and hulls - but I guess that's Mono sailors simply being awkward for ya ).

Looks like a Yorktown 39' CC to me.In a separate incident,a catamaran capsized Feb. 20 near Cedar Keys Fla. in Gulf of Mexico ,with 2 men and a boy aboard who were rescued by coastguard.
