ClassicalBGP, maybe this anchor information will help you.

LOL. Not sure about Senator Wash, but water is hard to come by here. Got to swim where you can. But I have found a 16lb Delta here local (shocking I know) but guy wants $100 and so far haven't seen any good reviews on this thread.

This anchor is old and worn but works well

It works so much better than the ones on the boats I bought when I was 17 years old.
I have to agree. I used CQR anchors on the last two boats I've owned, and never had a problem. Held every time. I did replace my main anchor with a Spade a few months back after watching Panope's videos, as we sail in the same area. But I've kept my CQR...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

Need to correct. 14lb not 16lb delta for $100.

I went and watched s/v panope vids. The delta doesn't test as well as some, but much better than the danforth that I have now. But the delta and qrc seems about the same. For the price range.

Re: Anchor types and General questions

cotemar: no doubt! after some trials we exchanged the 60lbs CQR for the 45lbs Bügel, because we found it better, & I'm convinced that the new-gen concave types (spade, mantus, rocna) are much better even.
BUT: just to say: the CQRs did their jobs, & did them well
(BUT: we are sticklers for anchoring: always strongly backing down, if at all possible diving & taking a look, etc. etc.)

This is very helpful. Lots of good information packed into understandable charts. Thank you.

However, for the last week I have been searching for a new anchor (seeing whats out there) and last day or so (after reading this and watching the Panope vids) looking for a shovel type anchor. The issue becomes, 99% of the time I will never use an anchor. I am taking this trip for a week or so where I can see the anchor getting used. I hate to spend $350-400 on one that is simply going to set on the bow. At the same time, I hear what everyone is saying on here about when you need it and it fails......

I have found a new Delta 6kg, with shipping for $103. It looked like it performed well, not as good as some on the charts and vids. Do you (or anyone) think the Delta is a good compromise in price v. use v. holding?

Maybe you are not viewing all the replies. ANY new style anchor is going to perform better than that Delta. Don't want to spend $300? Here you go...brand new and its a 22 pound, new style, basically a twin of the Rocna anchor. It will outperform that Delta you are looking at with ease! $160.

ClassicalBGP,

You would be much better off with one of these Rocna copies for $107 usd on eBay w/free shipping.

If you have to use a plow anchor (1950's design), my recommendation would be the cancel the 1 week trip, as you will be much safer at home.

Re: Anchor types and General questions

jeeze . . . . the delta is a perfectly adequate anchor.

It is not the latest and best thing . . . . but if you found a good deal which fits your boat, it will be just fine.

Make sure it is set and put enough scope out . . . and you will be all good.

I saw that, but on the page it has a link to one for $76.

Now I am torn between name brand Delta and this copy. But, I am leaning towards the copy of the Rocna.

Re: Anchor types and General questions

so amusing

there are several people on this board who 'made their name' over the 'rocna steel quality' issue. the requirement for a specific (high) grade steel and the absolute need for published specifications.

and here we have moderators now pushing generic no-name knock-offs with no specifications at all.

It is just funny.

I personally have no idea whether that $76 rocna copy is any good or not.

I'm with you, Evans... this is just bizarre ! Craig Smith must be having hysterics if he's still around.

I'm expecting a lot of bent shanks or worse with these anchors, but i'm a card carrying skeptic. I guess we will see how it all plays out.
